Wikileaks revelations underwhelming

Apart from the spying stuff, nothing was really too shocking. It was all seen, there was just no confirmation.

Eg: Serbia always pushing to get into the EU and most people believing that they were never going to get any go ahead. Now despite all the rhetoric from EU politicians, that one dude (forgot his name now) said basically... except Croatia, no one is getting into the EU for the foreseeable future. So while those leaks have confirmed suspicions about various things, they haven't really shocked anyone to any great extent.

compare these: http://cnn.com , and just an example http://www.guardian.co.uk/ Censorship, i think it is clear to see... "hosting stolen information is most definitely a crime" ok so why not put out a warrant for his arrest relating to these crimes instead of the alleged rape charges which were initially dropped by Sweden's chief prosecutor and only later reinstated when a Swedish politician intervened! I think you have to be either dumb or stupid to not see what is actually going on here....

So if it's so obviously a "smear campaign" why is he on the run?

Hey, if you had such a fantastic lifestyle totally funded by sheep on the internet, wouldn't you also move to a new hotel every other week? :D

I think the bigger problem here is how the governments of the world are trying to control the media, journalists and the internet. It is a total disgrace...just go over to cnn...nothing nada about the wikileaks saga...why? I will let you decide that for yourselves! A media puppet for the US, oh most definitely. Also remember that Assange has actually not committed any crime, it is very clear that the warrant for his arrest is totally bogus and politically motivated. This is all very bad news for us the people...power hungry governments who are willing to break their own and international laws just to save face...where is this world going to...If you believe in Freedom of Speech then your full support should be behind Wikileaks, if not, shut up and be one of the puppets and let the government pull your strings.

agree with this , except the reference to coverage on CNN , it was comprehensive , it has died off ...

You might think the man’s character is dubious, you might think his motives are immoral but there is no disputing the contents of the cables. If they were / are false then why is the USA making such a fuss about them ??

It's not so much the content it's confidence. Now other countries are less likely to be frank if they think their opinions are going to be splashed all over the papers.

In fact governments are going to clamp down far more now which makes it harder for real journalists to expose nefarious goings on.

This is not rocket science.

Actually they are not. They have already covered their bases by speaking to the parties that were affected by the leaks, that happened even before the leak. They are not making a fuss about the content of the leak. They are making a fuss because the leak happened. Big difference. The news media have let the story slide cos there is really not a whole lot of interesting stuff there (and a lot of it is still being sorted through and sifted for more info).

Nail -> Head! Well said. The damage to international relations is incalculable. This time the leak affected the USA... but next time... it might be another country... that is not strong enough to handle the exposure.

By exposing this leak and calling for transparency, Wikileaks may have inadvertently forced certain sharing of information to be cut off. Who will be willing to share info on terrorist organisations if the info they share can be leaked to the internet and lead back to them.

I don't think it is inadvertent. Assange knew exactly what the consequence of his actions would be. His interest is not freedom of speech but his own 5 minutes of fame.

well there will always be sceptics, that's what makes the world go round. I think the worst is yet to come though, once the key to the insurance file comes out, a lot will change.

Firstly, yes, there have been some damning stories released.

Secondly, yes, we mostly expected a lot of these stories for a long time, but now they've been proven.

Proven? How so? This means nothing. The fact that two diplomats talked about it means nothing until it is enacted as official US Policy or released through legitimate Media Channels.

If you overhear me and my neighbour talking over the fence about crime and one of us says that there are no more police officers working our area. Are you going to run out and publish to the world that there are no more police officers in our area? No... it is hearsay... and nothing more than that.
