Wikileaks to target wealthy individuals

Details on up to 2,000 wealthy individuals and corporations, including politicians and celebrities, are thought to be included on the CD which was produced by Rudolf Elmer, a former employee at a Swiss bank.

Mr Elmer said he wanted to disclose details of potential mass tax evasion before he flies back to Switzerland to stand trial accused of stealing information from a bank.

He said those named in the documents are from Britain, America, Germany, Austria, Asia and ''all over''.

At the Frontline Club in London, Mr Elmer gave Mr Assange two CDs allegedly containing the offshore bank account details of the "high net worth" individuals and businesses.

Mr Elmer, a former executive at Julius Baer Bank, one of Switzerland's top private banks, said he was releasing the information to educate society.

"I do think as banker I have the right to stand up if something is wrong," he said.

"I am against the system. I know how the system works and I know the day to day business. From that point of view, I wanted to let society know what I know. It is damaging our society."

Mr Assange, who is currently fighting an extradition battle to Sweden where he faces sexual offences allegations, said the names could be published on the WikiLeaks website in two weeks' time, once they have been verified.

I must just point out, it is Rudolf Elmer who is releasing this information, I'm sure were it not through Wikileaks, it would be someone else.

Would you pay R10mil+ in tax looking at how our government officials are spending it? Cars, expensive hotel stays for no reason, refusing to live in a perfectly good house and insisting on a new one being bought... to name a few examples.

I would pay as little as possible if I were in that sort of financial situation, no way am I going to pay for some corrupt morons BMW.
 
What ever happened to giving that info to the government so that they can investigate?

Are we all vigilantes now, that we want to lynch these people in public?

Are governments ever going to be transparent in their dealings with us?

I don't mind Wikileaks getting it first.
Thereafter the respective governments can investigate imo.

It is not always that easy to conduct an impartial and fair investigation or trial when all the info is already public. It undermines the principle of innocent until proven guilty... but I guess that all goes out the window when Wikileaks rides into town. :rolleyes:

If not Wikileaks, then someone else. Rudolf Elmer is leaking this information, he just happens to have chosen the channel that will do the most good with the information he is providing. If he felt it would have been well dealt with by the government, I am sure he would have handed the info to them.

You have to presume someone in his position has a slight clue as to where the information will have a useful impact.

In any case, yet again, I need to point out that Wikileaks are doing what various news agencies and investigative journalists have been doing for decades...

and for decades the rich have been hiring hot shot lawyers and getting their cases dismissed because the evidence was not "clean" or the judge was exposed to "undue influence".

yeah... wonderful system. :rolleyes:

Or perhaps information just never got out in the first place?

As I said though, yet again, Wikileaks are doing what investigative journalists have been doing for years. I fail to understand the anger directed at them. If people want to express their anger at someone, the actual person doing the leaking makes a far more logical target.

If your assertion is that the world would be better if secrets were entrusted to be dealt with by the very powers who could potentially be negatively affected by those secrets, that's really verging on the absurd.

no, not at all. I think corruption should always be exposed and prosecuted. But only using the right channels. Nothing good can come of this global vigilantism... just as small scale local vigilantism should also be stamped out.
