Will a basic income grant give people a reason not to work?

I actually don't have an issue with UBI as long as it replaces all social grants. The administration savings would probably end up being a net win for the tax base.

I think most people want to work, but there will be those who just collect the grant and not go looking for work like you get in any welfare system (like those who live on the dole in the UK). Suppose you could make people prove that they are looking for work. Somehow. Won't be fool proof but it is better than nothing.

Then the stamps become the currency like happens in the US. Got to spaza, handover the voucher and get 350 in return. Like how students are able to buy booze with those cards that aren't meant to be usable for anything but books.

There is already all sorts of "syndromic dependencies".... this wont create anything new it will only add to what already exists.

No at R300 it will not, what will happen is they will take the R300 and work piece jobs or not work, basically whatever they were doing before the grant came into effect but with R300 extra a month.

I always say our system is flawed. Dont give the grant per kid.
Give more for less. So if you have 1 kid you get R1000, if you have 2 kids you get R800 for both. 3 kids you get R600 for all 3 and so on.
