Will a wireless router bought in USA work in SA ??

Am currently in the USA and just bought a new laptop, a Toshiba M45-S359, which has built-in Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection (802.11b/g). Prices are too good to be true here.
I use a corded Telkom ADSL router at home and obviously need to go wireless with the laptop. I looked at the Telkom offering and see it sells for R2K. Have also looked at ADSL routers here and much much cheaper, seems the expensive ones are around R600.
I don't have time right now to research this but will a wireless router bought here in the USA work at home ?? What sort of speeds should I look for and any advice/recommendations on manufacturer ??

Should work no problem, I purchase a WRT54g from the states, it was dual 110-220v, so all I had to do was buy a convertor plug.

Just make sure the power supply is 110v-220v and you should be fine

I won't ask about your return through the SARS check at the airport since that can push the price up somewhat... :-)

You should be fine with any WIFI router. Just make sure it is a true router and has the ADSL modem built in (unlike those that expect you to connect your ADSL unit via RJ45 port, etc.)

You can get some thing like the Billion 7202G here for bout R800, and it has an ADSL modem built in, wifi, 4 eithernet ports...

Telkom's stuff is really hecticly overpriced
 
As long as it's 802.11b/g ... afaik USA uses 802.11a?

No they don't!

Just make sure it can handle both 110/220Volts, or has an external powersupply which you can subsitute with a local 220V wallwart transformer.
 
Thanks all, will buy one here then, hopefully be 110/220 but that's not too much of a problem.
Prices of PC equip are amazingly low - could go mad.....!!
I appreciate the advice.

We came back at the end of August. I brought all my electronics with me from the USA. Home theatre system etc. I bought step down transformers from dvdoverseas.com

I brought my D-Link DI 624 wirelesess b/g router with me. It only has 110V adapter, but I'm using it on one of my step down transformers with iBurst and it's working just fine.

Be prepared for big sticker shock, everything here is 2 x to 3 x more expensive ! Paid R599 for an ADSL modem, so if you have one, bring it too. I couldn't find just plain vanilla ones at Best Buy etc. though. If you're bringing other US appliances etc. buy some adapter plugs from dvdoverseas.com, they are like $1.99 per plug. Here they sell for like R50 - R70 per plug.
 
a 802.11g router is just that, a device build on IEEE( the I stands for international) 802.11g spec
as with all specs it will work with any simulary specked device.
g will also work with b, its part of the speck.

the only thing you have to worry about is the differing power between the sates 110 and most of the worlds 240.Many devices will auto swap this or there power adaptors can be swapped out for one of the right voltage.

Bought my wrt54 in the states too... didn't check the voltage on the converter thoufg so it blew up lol. luckily didn't damage the router...

Try and get one of the new ones with A B and G . The A spectrum is a bit less poluted I heard.
