Would like some opinions from those who know more about the PC hardware market than myself.

Some serious bargains to be had already eg:
  • RX 6800 for R 10 000
  • RX 6750 XT for R 9 000
  • RTX 3070 for R10 000
There's more but this is just the range I'm looking in.

Thoughts?

Once RDNA3 from AMD and RTX 40 series launch from Nvidia, and once stock hits SA shores, I would imagine yes prices have to come down further, by a fair bit I think*.

You might have to wait till end of the year though or sometime into Q1 2023.

*Barring China invading Taiwan and the ZAR worsening a lot of course.

I bought a 6700xt a few months ago for 11k from w00t.

I think you also need to factor in the time you spend waiting for prices to go down.

We knew cards were overpriced because we had a feel for the market. Now prices are coming down, but how long do you plan to wait?

If prices go down let's say 20% in 3 months, is 3 months' worth of usage (i.e, not waiting and buying now) worth it for you? Approach it from that point.

That's a good point. Prices came down pretty fast - at some point lower every week - but not so much the last week or so. If its going to be a slow burn downwards from now on then yeah I may just buy now.

And as DBTA said - prices have to come faster that the Rand loses value too :)

Different opinions on this ofcourse but I'm not concerned about Taiwan as long as such a large part of their economy is dependent on TSMC (and a few others in TW) for chips. Not while the banks are in crap condition anyway.

The story of China scaling up chip manufacturing reads much like the story of Kusile and Mdupi.

ZAR is a different story though...

Mr. leather jacket should be announcing the RTX 4000 series on the 20th of this month.

JayzTwoCents actually paints the picture of what Jensen mentioned to shareholders in the Q2 investor call. As far as the green side, stock is being held to keep prices from dropping further. In terms of getting any GPU from that side, it maybe good to grab something now. Fact that most are at RRP or below, makes it a good time to invest.

Waiting game is never-ending and for me, if I have the money, I don't' want to wait for tomorrow because as grim as it sounds, what if one is not around tomorrow to enjoy hmm o_O .

Paul's Hardware also summed up prices on both sides and I think gives also another indication to buy or not.

tl:dr
Bleeding edge - wait
Enjoy gaming/video encoding etc and family now. Go ahead and then share with us what you have done [we family right?] :p

Nobody mentioned Intel ARC :D. Someday?

I don't think they'll come down much more in SA, in the big markets there will be fire sales but unfortunately won't be much for us.

Depends on pricing of the new offerings from AMD and Nvidia though? Once the new range is out and actually available, so likely only sometime in Q1 2023 for us and once the 4070 is there to push the likes of the older competing cards down in price. Disclaimer: I have not finished watching the Paul's Hardware vid to the end yet.

Those aren't going to be cheap, plus we have the rand and dollar, plus the waiting game. If you need to upgrade now, why wait till 3 maybe 4 months time for a possible price reduction when the prices are already far better than they were even 4 months ago, plus you get to use it now.
If I had waited with my old 2060 super for the 40 series to come out I would still be waiting. Instead I managed to get a 3070ti for 11499, the cheapest it has been for a long time and I've had it for 3 or so months now being able to get 100 plus fps in games on 1440p.
So why wait for the possible drop in months time if you can get it now, by the time the 40 series drops I would've had almost a year out of my card.
Same as when I went for the 5600 upgrade, instead of waiting for the 7000 series to drop, if I did I would have needed a new motherboard, new ram and new chip which would be vastly more expensive.

They will come down is $ terms when the new generation launches. With regards to the Rand / dollar conversion I think the Rand is undervalued and should strength by end of the year but could be wrong. I would wait for a special / November before pulling the trigger on a new GPU
