Will Mweb ever offer a proper capped service again?

What the heading says.

You have a nice affordable 384 uncapped service... which is great.

Then you have a 4mbps uncapped service.... which is also great... but a tad expensive.

Then you have capped options... but they all seem limited to 384k?

So, as far as I can see, there really is no middle ground. It's either ultra or entry level.

Is there a future possibility of a 10GB capped 4mbps service of example.

I’ve transferred my dsl line rental from Telkom to Mweb. Which was pretty painless and quick. But now it seems like a total schlep to transfer the line from Mweb to another ISP… which = irony…

All capped options will run at your max line speed. So 4 meg or even 10 meg if your exchange has been upgraded :)

Mweb Capped packages are rubbish rather go for WA 10mbps 10gig cap for R599 also the line transfer will be painless.

Ahhhhhhh ok thanks...

But that still means you need a separate dsl line.

From the brochure it says "Our all-inclusive ADSL packages are only available on a 384 kbps line. This is a good option for one or two users browsing the web and sending emails. Download: 384 kbps. Upload: 128 kbps."

You see, my point is this. I currently have a “all-inclusive” mweb 512 uncapped account. So the dsl line rental is included. I want to upgrade to 4mb but not the uncapped version as it’s slightly expensive. Something like 10GB cap, 4mbps account (like the WA one) would do just fine.

Now the only option I see available to me is to go through the trouble to cancel my line rental from mweb… revert it Telkom, upgrade the line, and then sign up to a capped mweb (or whoever) account again.

So...in essence... I pretty much have zero upgrade options (apart from 4mb uncapped) unless I cancel my mweb account and start from scratch...

if you want to go really cheap you can get IS gigs at less than R20 each that run up to 10 megabit. but i've been reading things about IS, -
up oneday... down the next
i try stay clear of migrating the line away from the devil, because the others want it to be initially with telkom before they'll take it and i hear getting it back to telkom once someone else has it is a mission

Just take the 4meg uncapped. Once you get used to 4meg speeds the gigs will flow. 10gigs won't be enough.

Erg… unfortunately I did this. This is what annoys me though. You have all these ISP’s pointing fingers at Telkom to drop their monopolistic nature, which is fine. Now even though the line still belongs to Telkom, one can finally consolidate your dsl line rental and data into one account with which ever ISP you choose. This is dealt with very quickly and effectively by the mere means of filling out a web form.

Now the consumer wants to move the account/line to anther ISP and what does the consumer’s current ISP do? They act like Telkom by making it a huge mission (phone calls/faxes/ID’s/blood samples etc etc) to revert the line back.
Hypocrites… all of them.

Capped is for people living in the early 2000's(2000-2003)
That may be, but the capped accounts costs a fraction of the uncapped accounts in SA.

Like I'm currently rolling on 30GB IS Local only from Axxess for R99, 1GB WebAfrica account (for WAGE) for R15 once off, and Free 1 & 2GB/month accounts from @lantic, Afrihost and Cybersmart.

I have been pondering about moving to Mweb uncapped, simply because the latencies are lower on it than I currently get from the IS Local only.

Ya look not everyone downloads 24/7. But on the odd occation that they do d/l it would be nice not to have it go at 30kbps.

3-5GB capped accounts are "2000's" as you put it. 10-30GB with some cheap top up options is good enough for a whole of folks and it's affordable.

I'd love a 4mbps upcapped account. But @ R900pm, it's still slightly expensive.

dumb question:

Is there a way to check if your exchange supports 4mbps? I have founf the 10mbps checker on telkoms site... but nothing about 4mbps...

Yeah I'm also pondering 'upgrading' to a 4meg line as the 384k line can be frustrating when you 'quickly' want to download that 100MB file or 'quickly' want to check out that youtube video. I don't necessarily need uncapped as my even with my uncapped unshaped 348k line I tend to download more crap than I can watch (or use) anyway.

The unshaped packages from TRL Tech look good but the 'Offer valid until 31 March 2010' part puts me off a little. Hmmm... decisions decisions.

I'm with TRL and the speeds are good. got a 4meg line and my http downloads run at 420kb constantly and torrents 180kb. got a nice deal with a 30gb unshaped cap. don't really need to dl the whole internetz or 24/7. when i need something, i can watch an series episode in like 30min. streaming supersport on a wide 17'' screen form my laptop while i'm downloading. what a pleasure from going from mweb 384 uncapped. its true what they say, once you have gone up to 4meg, your never wana look back.

it all depends on your budget vs your needs. i'm happy with it atm, future wise would like i bigger cap

just my 2c

Hi MartyMarts,

If you order during this promotional period, your pricing would be locked-in :)

Glad to hear that someone still managed to get good service from Telkom :)

Well 3rd time (in the space of an hour) lucky ;)
I discovered the key to phoning Telkom today: If you end up with a fractious & unwilling call centre operator, just keep calling back until you hear a willing, helpful voice :)

Hehe. I like that idea. The only thing is that you could end up calling for ages. It's a game of luck in my opinion. My philosophy: call until you're either blue in the face or.. Well, until you're blue in the face..

I would switch to Neotel if it wasn't for my need for ADSL as well, since their rates are much lower, especially recently. Also, the one thing I don't get is why people go for the Telkom ADSL specials which are not special at all compared to what's out there. Ignorance?

Yeah it is a game of luck but applying some patience and persistence doesn't hurt. Like I mentioned in another thread, in the space of an hour I spoke to three different Telkom peoples and heard three completely different stories. If I had listened to the 1st & 2nd operator I wouldn't have ended up upgrading to 4meg.

I would definitely not recommend Neotel.
