i might buy a HIS radeon HD6950, and i would like to know weather it will fit in a Gigabyte X1 case
 
it should but might be a bit of a rather close fit.

You could get temp problems with too much in that chassis.
 
I would advise you to rather get a new case too, seeing that your components will run very hot due to virtually no airflow.

One of the best entry level cases that I know of is the Coolermaster Elite 430 which goes for around R430. You might want to buy an additional 120x25x25mm fan for that case though.

Which one, there are four models?

Dimensions of the 1GB model is 12.6 x 4.2 x 25.5 cm (HxWxD).
Edit: Looks like some 2GB models are the same length http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-587.shtml
The others might differ.

What is the distance between the back of your case & the drive cages measured across the PCI-E slot?
