Howzit,

I recently aqcuired an i7 940 with the eVGA x58 mobo.

Now my PSU doesnt have the required 8 pin CPU connecter. will my 4 pin connector work if i plug it in?
However I have a 6 pins free on the power supply. So im thinking ill just go buy a 6pin -> 8 pin 12v for the cpu. Anyone know where i can find one? Google yields little :/
Not looking to OC or anything

Shap

thinking out the box here :erm: ...

having a PSU with only one 4pin sounds like it's too old for your new hardware.....
using a converter will make no difference, as the power coming through the original wires, will still be the same......if the PSU had enough power to support 8pins, they would have supplied it with 8pins

the 4pins might work, but i'm sure the PSU itself will give you problems with this new build, long before the 8pin issue

What does the mobo manual say? ... does the board require 8 pins to be populated?

It will work with the 4pin but i'd recommend getting a better PSU.

Yes, I must agree with COMPUTEK. If its doesn't have the plug its probably too old. Be aware tho, that my psu has two 4 pin connectors that plug into the 8 pin slot. This is so that its backward compatible with the older boards.
The 6 pin plug is for a graphics card.

Honestly I think you're looking for trouble using an old psu with your shiny new hardware. Bite the bullet and get a new psu.

Eish, i was afraid of that. My PSU is a bit old but its awesome, served me well over the past 3-4 years. Omega 500w , its still power ! :( guess ill have to invest some more money eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek

what u guys think about
500w OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ PowerWhisper Technology

http://www.zapsonline.com/500w-psu/...odular-500w-power-supply-foocz500mxsp-eu.html

Im really keen on trying to keep the costs down but atleast get a PSU thats reliable

MadMan: the 6 pin i was referring to sits on my PSU. i have 4x 6 pin slots for all alternative stuff like SATA, PCI-E etc.
I have 1 of those slots open which im sure could be used to connect to my cpu?
500w version of http://www.systemshock.co.za/forums/index.php/topic/11295-omega-600w-psuantec-psu-tester/
I have lost my box and any extra cables that it had with it except for the ones i currently use :(

i see what you mean .... but usually all power to the mobo comes directly out the PSU and does not form part of that modular wire setup for other peripherals  ....
so i'm sure you'll not find a 6pin PSU to 8pin CPU

Got the 400w OCZ StealthXStream in another PC .. Very nice quality PSU.. Haven't used it for too long.. But it's still going strong :)

Full PC specs = i7 940, evga x58 SLI, HD5850, 2x Sata HDD, 6gb Corsair 1333mhz Ram, 1x DVD writer.

According to the calculator thing i would require 384W of power.

Shot for the suggestion but it only has 1 x 4-pin CPU :( need a 8-pin.

@COMPUTEK : yeah i think its impossible to find such a cable :(. will a 2x4 ping molex -> 8pin CPU work... or is that asking for trouble?

It might work, but I wouldn't want to take a chance. The molex to 8-pin connector idea is actually not bad, or maybe even a molex to 4-pin, combined with the other 4-pin connector.

As long as your PSU can put out the required watta on the CPU power cable you'll be fine, though I would at least get a 4-8 pin converter. Most of the board will work with only the 4 pin connected, but it depends on how the manufacturer decided to share the power throughout the board. You may find that some pins are not connected at all to the other power pins. Hence the need for a 4-8 pin converter

Hey,

Where is my itrader. :p

I should work, but like most guys says, maybe get a new one and the one I would recommend is the Gigagyte Odin 585w. Best bang for buck imo. Think it is going for about R540...

Thanks for the link Synaesthiesia.

I see they got the 2x molex -> 8 pin CPU cable.. as long as you connect the 2 molex connecters to different cables in the PSU it should work fine as to not overload single cables. Hmmm interesting

lol shark :D howdy :p

Yeah i looked at the odin.. i see its got 2x4 pins which would work great. HMmm i think i might just take the dive
Better safe than sorry

Hey,

Like I said, I am pretty sure the 4pin will work, if you don't want to OC and then wait for payday and get the Odin. :)

Arg, no stock of it anywhere :/

Any idea's on huntkey PSU's ? I've heard alot of *** with them.. but now i spoke to the Zaps guy and the Pcint guy and they say they havnt had any returned
