On 8 July 2008 HP through their subsidiary company running their LightScribe disc labeling tech business announced the introduction of red, orange, yellow, blue and green background DVD discs for use with LightScribe enabled DVD writers.
Just yesterday I used the technology to make a gift for somebody but it bugs me how this technology four years in the making still hasn’t dropped in price to the degree where it becomes economical to use it at large. The retail price of LightScribe discs are still prohibitively high and even though there are competing technologies out there like Label Flash and DiscT@2 they seem to be localized within specialty industries and don’t offer the man on the street much relief from what could be a much more widely used labeling system.
I doubt the research investment in Lightscribe was so big that it is taking so long for it to drop in price. It is time somebody else came up with an in writer labeling system that is easy and above all cheap to use. Printing labels on stickers just sucks! Lets be honest about it. LightScribe is a cool and friendly technology but as with printer cartridges, HP is holding consumers ransom. It should not be like this.
Surely there is somebody with a billion bucks lying around doing nothing that could give HP a run for their money.
Come on already!
