I got a MED500X yesterday.
I will probably buy a drive for it sometime, but right now I just want to stream media to it in the bedroom. I am going to run a cable to it this afternoon.

Would I be able to do this from my media center pc without a drive?

Yes you will
Will you be using the wireless dongle or LAN cable? wireless is ok for streaming most stuff, but would recomend LAN for blu rays etc

Just make sure you don't update your firmware to Version 2+. It has a requirement for a hard drive, and they're currently working on a solution. Version 1.2.2a (I think) is the latest version that works without an HDD.

If you need further help, best place to hang out and ask is the mede8or forums.

why not just use a flashdrive in the usb and save yourself some cash, till you buy a hhd ?

I ended up sticking an old 500 gig in it, It was much easier than hassling without it.

That said, its a really nice thing! I have it connected via cable to the network, and so far it even plays the 1080 files over the network without a stutter. I think I might just get another one and use it in the lounge instead of the ps3...
