Hi

We're 4 employees that want to work from home. If each one gets a HomeDSL512 with an openweb 30Gig Local only account, and then VPN into the office network, will it work with VoIP? So there will be one call only on the DSL line.

Basically my question is: is the 30 gig local account shaped very badly during peak business hours?? Will I be able to make phone calls over a VPN? (shaping wise)??

Thanks

Does telkom shape vpn's?

I thought local was not shapped.
I would agree, to my knowledge SAIX dont shape within their core network.

Anyway I doubt they want to get to creative with the configs on their ESRs & GSRs so as not to risk instability, and there isnt much other kit that can scale to those levels.

What are voip your environment like ?
* Asterisk (sip or iax ?)
* 3rd party pabx slot-in module (siemens/pana/nec/avaya...)
* off the shelf sip/dsl router combo / 4/8 port fxo/fxs router
What type of vpn will you be using ?
How strong is your encryption going to be ? (keylength/refresh interval)

Hi Gerry

* Asterisk, we can run SIP or IAX (would prob be a softphone to start with, will get a proper phone later, Testing with X-lite)
* Using 4 linksys SPA 3000 modules to connect to Telkom lines
* Old DSL modem, not even a router, but I have a Linux Firewall and router set up on a seperate machine(Smoothwall).
* Using OpenVPN with no encryption at the moment, want to keep it fast rather than safe. If Encryption wont slow it down too much, ill play around with different types and see what works.

As you can see everyting is very simple, so that if something doesn't work, it will probably be the DSL line.

Running on Port 443 is a good idea, will give it a go.

Thanks for replies! ;-)

I would also recommend having a backup comms method just in case of DSL failure either due to Telkom/ISP screwups or your router going flaky on a weekend with the supplier only opening again on Monday.

I have an EDGE cellphone with bluetooth just in case I needed to VPN to work as a last resort.
