Hey all.

I used to have the Telkom Simple package and all worked fine. Then I moved house and it seems I was one of the furthest houses from the exchange. My line was erratic due to my attenuation sitting at about 60dB. Telkom said there was nothing they could do so I cancelled my service.

Then, recently some Telkom reps have called me to say they have now installed VDSL services and would I like to sign up, I asked about whether it fixed the attenuation and they said it would...

Can anyone here offer some advice whether they have experienced this and by upgrading to VDSL it has in fact sorted out attenuation issues ?

Thanks.

Yes, it will.

To offer you VDSL means that there is a MSAN (or ISAM, depending on where you live) somewhere very close to you!

The MSAN is provisioned with an optic fibre backbone and then it is a short copper cable connection to your premises. For VDSL that means VERY short!!

Great !! Thanks for the quick reply ... looking forward to getting it installed then !

Warning:

Before signing anything, request them to do tests to confirm the maximum upload rate to your premises. VDSL is 20Mbps and better (per Telkom's current products).

If they cannot guarantee VDSL, look at a 10Mbps ADSL product.

Bottom line... check the PRICING and determine what will offer you better value in terms of Line and ISP !!!

Thanks - to confirm then, say they were to reactivate my old ADSL service would this use the new MSAN and solve the attenuation issue ?

Upgrading to VDSL doesn't decrease your attenuation or increase your SNR it in-fact makes it worse - that is the reason for MSAN in the first place. MSANs brings the exchange closer to your house which decreases your attenuation not VDSL.
A MSAN can support ADSL, VDSL and FTTH so if you are just linked to a MSAN using ADSL you should get better line stats - without having to upgrade your line to VDSL.

When my area was upgraded I was able to achieve 10mbps where before I couldn't only 7mbps and my SNR was around 12db its 28db @ 10mbps now - a huge improvement and I'm still on ADSL.

If I where you I would wait for your DP to be moved onto the MSAN before you upgrade - if you are on the MSAN already and have poor stats I don't see upgrading to VDSL helping... you are too far from the MSAN/ not connected to it yet/ or have a dodgy line.

Upgrading to VDSL doesn't necessarily decrease your attenuation or increase your SNR that's what the MSAN does.

They would not have offered him VDSL if his DP had not been moved yet.

Thanks Ryan - think I will need to chat to them and see if they have put my line through the MSAN. Do you know an easy way of doing this other than going through their normal call centre??

From my experience: No.
Upgraded to 20 mbps, and my attenuations were a lot worse. Non-stop disconnects for 2 months, even on speeds down to 7 mbps.
3 months down the line I finally got the answer out of Telkom that the exchange, although VDSL, could still only handle 10 mbps.

So it was an expensive exercise for nothing.

Oh, and the VDSL modem from telkom I got was rubbish. Had to replace the first one and the 2nd one would disconnect itself.
Gave up and went back to older modem, no problems. So after 3 months I was back to where I started, minus the costs for the 3 months faster speed (which I never saw) and the cost of the modem (which I dont use)

I was offered prior to it being connected?

Check it out its a fact VDSL attenuates more than ADSL.

Just make sure that the person who phones you is 100% sure that they can offer it to you. Have the techs test your line.

We've been offered VDSL twice at our offices only to fill out all the paperwork, have broken internet and then get told that we cannot get VDSL.

See my post #5 ...

Yep, just confirming with my story too.

And mine was with the business department, you think they would know better to check these things before they make you fill out paperwork.
Telkom did have major issues in DA country... CoCT would not give them wayleaves or provide them with AC power connections. TSA were wrong to try and cut over customers, should have left them as is until the issues were resolved.

Thanks all for your input here ... On digging a little deeper it seems that my line has been migrated but is still only capable of 10Mbs!
