they have so much choice with 5 time the speed, at a fraction of the cost.
Will we ever be in the same boat.

maybe if we shrink the geographic area to similar proportions we will get better coverage and cheaper network costs.... oh, and don't forget those little undersea cables we rely upon!

With an internet penetration of 5 million people (10% of the population), the market in South Africa is simply too small for companies to invest in the kind of infrastructure that would allow us to have the same level of service and speed as in the UK, and at the same cost.

The middle class in South Africa is simply too small at the moment. You can't have true competition like you do in the UK with the small amount of people who use the internet in South Africa. That's why most ISP's in South Africa concentrate all their efforts on products for businesses and leave us poor residential consumers in the dark.

one day we'll be the same boat they're in now. by that time they'll be in a much nicer one..

Being behind with everything is something we have to accept. As long as ICASA is so slow with making rulings, we will always be disadvantaged.

Well if i ever go overseas remind me to go to The Netherlands!

Fiber Power 120 = 120mb/s download and 10mb/s upload with no cap for a cheap cheap R765.20
[http://www.upc.nl/internet/]

Well its actually a bit pricey though. Lets go to Switzerland then where you get Fiber power 100 = 100mb/s download and 7mb/s upload for R692.05 or get 100mb/s internet + Digital telephony + HD tv with recorder for R1019.90
[http://www.cablecom.ch/en/index/internet/hispeed.htm]

If that's too much for you lets go to South Korea.
100mb/s fiber internet for R217.95

Now you know how we suck in broadband. You will only get true broadband international. Africa will never see broadband like that!

Maybe if we can reverse the 70%-80% poor we have in this country.

It is all good and well having a 45 million population but does not really help when only a fraction of the population can afford a telephone let alone adsl.

You cannot expect us to compete with a country like england.

But don't you think that the high prices in communication and technology is the reason for very poor social development and poverty in the county/ I mean there would be millions more broadband subscribers if it was like R250 for 100mbs unlimited.

No. I don't. Poverty stricken folks think about food and shelter first.

I'm not reffering to people that is staying in shacks. I'm pointing to people living in urban areas. People in houses. I bet there is just like 1 or 2 broadband user per street. If it was cheaper we would have double or triple what we have now.

Not millions. The problem with poverty is it has nothing to do with technology or comms but rather education.

rather ask, wlll the u.k ever match us? i could bear the suffering a little longer if i knew the rest of the world was suffering with me. but they aren't and never have

We will never get closer to UK level. Why?
*We have very small user base, compared to UK.. It has like ~50% users of all population. Same with S. Korea and other "First World countries" [Keyword].
*We have poor user density per suburb/street [Keyword], in some countries where they have started in 2000, they now have better than SA. Things like flat blocks (from 5-9 floors) and not 1-2 buildings, but 10+ in suburb.
*We can reach only Australia's level.
