Will Wimax get speed upgrades like ADSL?

Depends on how much spectrum your provider has to play with.

As far speed upgrades are concerned. I think it would be wrong of Telkom not to do upgrades on WiMAX. 512kb/s is fast enough, people using ADSL get upgrades, why should people on WiMAX be limited? As for spectrum, I doubt that is the problem. WiMAX can theoretically do 70mbits/sec on a single frequency (If I understand the technology correctly)...

And that get's shared by how many people?

I remember reading that iburst will only be able to offer speeds up to 1Mbps because they only have 14mhz.

I have to agree with mysticBoer. The setup of the Wimax is the same as ADSL, only wireless. So, technically, we should be able to get the same speeds as ADSL users. :D

Wireless communication does not work on a single frequency. It works on a range (referred to as the bandwidth for obvious reasons) and this range is usually denoted by a single frequency number that is the center of this range.

The range of frequency (bandwidth of spectrum) that a particular provider has been allocated it intrinsically linked with the amount of speed that they can provide on their WiMax towers. Each tower in close proximity needs to be using a different piece of spectrum so that they do not interfere with each other. The total allocated spectrum has to be cut up into tiny slices for each WiMax base station and this defines the theoretical maximum speed that can be achieved.

Ok so with all that said and seeing that you are in radio

What are the chances of us getting a speed increase
 
You are right, we don't know much about radio, but what I do know is that my WiMax equipment connects to the base station as 100mbps...

Ok, thanks for that explanation...makes more sense now...

BUT...

With ADSL , when a DSLAM is used to capacity, they add more ports (albeit at a snails pace)...so they should just be able to do the same for wimax -> add more base stations...not right?

This is one time where you are lucky to have a monoply like Telkom as your Wimax provider. If anyone can get whats required for higher speeds, they can.

I could be wrong, but our signal comes directly from the top of the exchange and goes directly into the Dslam:confused:Therefore there should be a problem increasing speeds........ALSO read this...................


What about speeds achieved during the trials?

4 Mbps under suitable conditions.

‘During the trials Telkom said that they achieved 4 Mbps throughput to single customers. These speeds are obviously under suitable conditions, and for the trials they are launching a 512 Kbps downstream and 256 Kbps upstream service. Telkom plans to use WiMax in both metropolitan and rural areas to provision broadband to consumers’ (Telkom’s WiMax to initially serve major cities, MyADSL, 2 April 2007).

In other words, don’t expect lightning fast broadband speeds from Telkom’s WiMax service, although it will be better than to sit with a very slow dial up connection or no Internet connection at all.

ADSL South Africa (Broadband South Africa) welcomes Telkom’s efforts to launch a viable WiMax service. We’re sure many South Africans will benefit from this.
 
Ah well...so be it then. Lets hope for the best. I'll be honest, I'm quite happy with my 512kb connection. Serves me more than fine.

If I were to get any upgrade I would like it to be a higher cap. Most of the money I spend every month goes into bying caps. I have actually managed 3 x 30gb accounts in a month more than once.
 
Lets be honest, I am happy with the 512 as well, but will be more that happy to pay a bit more for a 1mb link... :-) I have to agree though, I think I will be more happy with cheaper cap options.
