I’m pretty sure when they announced this service the promise was that it would be free forever, so much for that then.

They’ve already annoyed me when they took their best product Inbox away, this will likely be the final straw to have me make the full switch to Apple.

Pretty sure it was that any photos uploaded would be free forever, which is kind of still true, since only new photos uploaded count towards your data usage after the date, all the old stuff is still "free" back-up.

Problem with "free"....

1) They will either shutdown down at some point because their VC fund ran out and can no longer pay their server costs and you'll read about the founder's incredible journey on a Medium blog post whilst you're rushing downloading 500gb of 'backed up' data onto your external drive because their servers gets wiped at 02:00 EST.

2) they will eventually have to start asking for money and that usually angers those who's been free riding for quite some time. Exactly what Google did now. Yes, Google, with all their billions of dollars in resources they realised it's not sustainable. TINSTAAFL

The ones you pay for from day 1 are usually the best and most reliable in the long term in my opinion.

Yes,
The hassle of backing up to an external drive just isn't worth it.
There's lot of other value in Google photos, with a young kid it's quite nice getting those automatically created videos at different milestones.

OneDrive used to back up everything from my phone and DSLR camera automatically, so RAW format photos and 4K video used to go straight to it. I had almost 6TB of files at one stage.
 
Nope have my own hosted cloud, synology Nas using Moments, all photos are sorted nicely by date.
Have not messed with Face recognition part yet.
What's on the Synology is backed up to an external just in case.
Part I prefer is when i want to look at photos on my TV, it loads the pictures instantly, with cloud storage I always had to wait.
 
As soon as my gmail account starts whining about space I will empty photos and never use it again.
 
I have a Synology and a G suite for offsite back up.
 
Real spanner in the works from Google, but for R30 a month, i will probably just continue using the service.

FYI, I have a lot of stuff backed up on google photos, I have been using it since it launched to make sure all pics from my phone are backed up. I then made sure to uploaded all my photos i had previously backed up on external drives. So quite a lot of stuff. I am currently using about 11gb of the 17gb i have.

So for me, i will probably pay the R30 per month to move me to 100gb (once i have used the 17gb).
 
I use a 'private' solution. Google isn't the only service doing this at the moment. There are many limited use consumer services which is suddenly coming to a stop, most which entail an uploading and cloud storage service, where users either have to upgrade to paid package or migrate to a business service.

For domain owners websites, I have lately noticed various price increases related to optimisation services. Still, relatively cheap, but price increases all adds up. Especially when you run a service like Mybroadband where users upload images.

I think many will be unhappy with Google's decision, but when it is not sustainable, they will explore growth options. Many people on this planet simply don't like to pay, even when a service is priced $0.01, and then there is the issue that people are used to have this photo bucket service at no cost. Those who will be upset the most are those who don't know about this or understand this change by expiration date.

The choices are all messy. You can get unlimited photo storage will Amazon Prime. But who necessarily wants to pay $12 a month when so many benefits are limited to the US like shipping benefits, even if one for example uses a VPN to get the included Amazon Prime Video if one even wants it.

Yet Google doesn't really bundle their benefits to the extent that Amazon does by going across their product range. You want YouTube Premium but Google doesn't bundle it with other benefits eg bundle it with unlimited photo storage as a Google cross-product bundle. Maybe you don't even want YouTube Music just ad-free YouTube only. Bad luck, no such option either.
 
I hold zero brand loyalty so looking forward to the competition providing specials on their products to win over Google users when the big switch happens
 
It's what, R300 for 100GBs of storage a year which you can share with family members? R100 more for 200GB.

Why cancel?
