I'm having an argument at work on how long it will take Zimbabwe to recover, should Mugabe be replaced with someone who TRIES turning the country around.

I say 20 years and she says 5 years.

Would it be a long to time or a short period? She's under the impression you flick a switch for mines and farms, and all will be ok ...

For Zim to recover to where it was pre-the-fsck-up?

20 - 30 years....

Some ppl will see results in 5 years, but for the majority it will be a long process
.

i hope so !

Nah it's a personal opinion really :/

Thought it suited here better.

I think 5 years will be too short a period. It may take that long just to convince foreign business to come back after some suitable @ss licking. The perception of the place is soo bad at the moment. I agree with 20 - 30 years minimum.

Education is key, so at least 50 years. Probably more.

I based my argument on that it took Germany 20 years or so years to recover after WW.

This would have generated more opinions had it stayed in Off Topic :(

Well, to be honest I think it would be at least 50 years before a turnaround could be seen if at all.

Zim

Don't compare Zim to Germany , but there is no comparison in Africa. You could maybe compare
Japan to Germany after WW2 and Hiroshima.
But Zim will take more then 50 Years look at other
African Countries, they where not so bad after
independence but now 50 years later?

I wasn't comparing per se ... just stating if one country did it in 20 years, then the chances are great Zimbabwe would take the same time or longer

If God Himself took up the presidency in "Zim" it would take Him a thousand years to straighten that lot out. And if you think SA can survive the terminal degeneration that is already starting to freefall (has been deteriorating since '94) then you must also believe in the tooth fairy.
Sorry, but why should this African state be any different?:(

There is very little hope for the entire Southern African region. Aids, corruption, poor leadership, voter apathy, power crisis, water crisis, education crisis, law enforcement crisis, poverty, brain drain, lack of investment, skills shortage, disinvestment, weak currencies, declining infrastructures, poor service delivery and so on.

The region is honestly doomed. The only hope for Africa is that aliens colonise the place.

Better to compare to Japan. Japan was much more agricultural society than Germany before, during and after the war. Yet Japan changed from a agrarian to an industrial and financial giant and managed to recover in 30-35 years (thought recover to the point that they were poised to become a major world player).

However, and I emphasis, however, the Japanese mentality must be taken into account. Japanese after the war took out second jobs, NOT because they had to but they were told it would aid the recovery of their economy. A long history of Japanese honour and nationalistic pride helped them achieve this and in record time. The Germans have a similar work ethic.

In a country where you would rather spend your money in the taverns after a day's work than lift a finger to help you community? Much, much longer. In fact you are doing the bare minimum at your one and only job. This continent does not see the bigger picture (hence our current crysis) and cannot see beyond their Friday pay check. Its not just about the leaders but also the attitude of the citizens: 40 to 50 years is a much better guess.

I think our little yellow slanty-eyed friends intend doing exactly that. :)
