Wimax and gaming

I have just been offered Wimax by Telkom as my dslam is full and the estimated completion date is sometime in the next 6-96 months.

I am in the Linden area and was wondering what sort of latency I could expect in general.

A ping result to saix.net would be greatly appreciated from anyone that is currently on Wimax.
 
Latency

I have a friend who just got Wimax from Telkom (for the same reason), he plays World of Warcraft with an average latency of 700ms. This is standard shaped internet access. I'm afraid I don't have a ping result, I could may ask him over the weekend but we do lots of raids together and his connection is quite stable and playable.

If I play using my 4096k ADSL line (granted line speed doesn't really affect the lag) with my shaped ISP account I get around 600-700ms, so the WiMAX isn't a bad option.

I play on SAIX all the time, with the same pings as my buddy's with ADSL.......:) Its worth every minute of having WIMAX!!!!:D
 
Using WiMax with a IS account. Pings a bit higher than normal, think its the spyware kicking up ;)

Usually get around 65-80ms, hope it helps!

Thanks Muffen Man that about comparable to a standard DSL which makes me extremely happy.
Now I just have to see if I have L.O.S....
 
Hmmm sounds like great pings that... Been waiting over a year for my ADSL connection and getting fed up now of waiting. I'm been running on 5.8Ghz wireless, but my LOS aint that great and my pings are very erratic.

Didn't think that WiMax would be that good with pings....

My only gripe is they only offer 512kbps WiMAX, would gladly pay for 4mbps WiMAX if they offered it.

Agreed!!!;) Let hope the powers that be at Telkom can offer higher speeds in the not to distant future although I wont bank on it:o
 
Not at all, I experience no difference no matter what the weather condition, the speed and ping stay constant!!!!:)

As far as i can tell. Can't see any difference between WiMax and ADSL.

Living in the cape, with all the rain and wind, i havnt had a moment's problem with my WiMax.

If ICASA can just wake up, WiMAX can really be the answer to South Africa's broadband problems???

Yes agreed, I feel exactly the same.........;)let just hope they give us a little more speed............:p
 
Well I have had the weekend to sit and play with the Wimax and quite frankly I am blown away.
The pings are incredibly stable even during the worst thunderstorm.
I dont do much international gaming but on the local SAIX and IS servers ping is a constant 40-45 making first person shooters more than playable.

I would'nt consider going back to wired DSL until someone launches a service that doesn't require you to take a land line as part of the bundle.
If anyone is wondering whether Wimax is worth it I can most definitely tell you that it is.
 
^^ how far are you from the base station? do you have clean line of sight ?

if possible a pic of your roof equipment ?

sorry for all the q's ...just curious :)
