i just spoke to the telkom guys about my wimax connection i have for our VOIP, we live in an area where the copper lines are stolen all the time, so they gave us a wimax connection to our local exchange.

They claim that i can get a "DSL" service on the wimax connection and use it a dsl line i.e go to axxess and get a dsl account from them. The question i have is what do you think the latency will be?

The guys at telkom tell me it should be about in the region of 60 -80 local if the signal is any good, which is great news, coming from the 3g network where 150 plus is the norm on my connection.

I've read a couple of threads here on wimax and it doesn't look like thats the case at all. However i'm not sure if all wimax works the same, one wireless connection to the exchange and cable from there, or if my situation is any different.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, i'd hate to get the service only to find that i now have a quarter of the speed and exactly the same latency :(

I have had my telkom wimax link for about 2 years now and get constant good speed and latency on it - i use both saix and IS accounts. Current local pings between 55 and 80ms on average.

WiMax works as a digital circuit, Say W111111111 this is a link number curcuit address for your wimax, Remember that WiMax is only last mile connectivity, its simply a different way of getting your phone line to your premisis.
The Service is actually a DSL or cable connection into the SAIX backbone, so you can use any PPPOE based service account to connect over your WiMax line if you have Data enabled over the circuit.

So yes, it is but it isnt ADSL, they are both equal in their method of connection, a DSL connection is a digital signal over copper, WiMax uses a digital signal over air.
PPPOE authentication is then initiated over the already connected but not open line.
Hence ADSL Sync on an ADSL modem. WiMax is the same.
