First off Forgive me if this is in the wrong section of the Forum.
Feel free to move it.

Anyways just got a call from MWEB to give me my Username and Password for testing their WIMAX Service. Yes my trial application has been approved.

As I am a staunch supporter of Telecoms Liberisation and MyADSL/MyBrodband.co.za I'll give full coverage of this usage.

Line your test packs, send them through and we'll see what happens.

I was told that someone in 7 working days will come out to my place to install an "Antennae" and I am assuming some sort of modem.

Anyways will keep you updated on this.

PS: On first impression their internal departments are quite hopeless.
They called on my number and were looking for someone else. I almost put the phone down just before the guy said "I am here to give you your WIMAX username and password". Anyways in short they mixed up my number with someone else's.

Cool, the obvious things to check are gonna be download speeds and latency. And seeing as Duncan Mcleodd is a part of the trials as well along with Abe and other forumites it looks like we're gonna have no shortages of WiMax "performance testers" ;)

Also, other things to look for is compatibility with other operating systems (Linux, Mac etc) and also with some firewall distros (Smoothwall, IPCop etc).

Enjoy!

Sweet thanks.

Dont get too excited yet. IMHO I think they made too much fuss over it. Might not be as wonderful as we all hope. <- I pray that I stand to be corrected on this.

Lets hope MWEB are not like Telkom when it comes to installation times ;)

Remember with a whole 5 people on each tower it will perform MUCH better than the real thing once the towers get loaded. These applicants have been selected because they will get good signal, not guaranteed in anyone elses case once it goes commercial.

The same thing happened with iBurst trials and probably MyWireless trials too.. be careful of that. However latency can still be measurable, which will be interesting to see. Theres a tower close by so I can't wait to see how it goes in any case. :D

I am in complete agreenment with you.
Load balancing is going to be a story. But MWEB have experience in such cases so I dont think they complete idiots wrt this concept. Iburst and Mywireless are complete imbocels. More worried about customers signing up then they were about service delivery.

I am more interested in looking at the latency.
If it handles my BF2 gaming then I'll be hoooked. But also they better offer uncapped options etc. And I want to see how it copes under bad weather etc.

So far nothing is more stable and reliant then copper ADSL.
I've got full LOS to Sandton City Tower. So it should be interesting to see how well it fairs.

Biggest issue for me would be concerning latency and packet loss.

Hmm if someone gets it up and running this week in Cape town they'll have a good measure of how performs in bad weather.

My iBurst went down for about 10 minutes last night because of the lightning, that kind of makes sense though, they put big metal, electrically charged boxes on top of the highest site in an area... so they get hit by lightning. I hope they thought of this with WiMax (and iBurst) and it won't be going down everytime theres lightning :(

Any idea what a WiMAX tower actually looks like? Omni antennas or sectors... or what exactly?
