Hi folks!

Been a while since I have posted on the forum, guess I have been lurking.:D

I currently have a 4 Meg ADSL line at home that has been pretty stable for most of the time I have had the line. BUT there are intermittent issues with line stability and sync issues with the DSLAM, from time to time...

I run a small server on this ADSL line and use DynDNS to update the IP address when it does change.

I have decided to install a Wimax "line" as backup for the ADSL line. The question is: Does Wimax provide a "routable" IP address similar to ADSL or is it NATed like the 3G connections?

I just need to be sure if the Wimax connection is similar to a ADSL connection ito IP address etc. Speed is not an issue, I just need a stable reliable connection.:)

Wimax does not work like ADSL unfortunately. I discovered this yesterday after receiving my "Static IP" address.

Seriously, you apply for something which clearly states "Static IP" for which you pay for; only to find out that it is not at all what you expected.

So I receive an e-mail with my new Static IP address; expecting to simply receive this address after dialing my PPPoE connection.

I requested additional details such as subnet, gateway, etc to manually configure these settings ONLY to receive a call from tech support telling me that this public IP will be routed to my private IP.

Rather disappointing...

I guess it depends on who supplies your Wimax.
I have wimax through telkom and i get a public routable IP address, exactly the same as adsl.
I suspect that Screamer wimax may use Nat'ed private IP's - though i am not sure.

Thanks for the info ramar.

I was actually refering to Telkom Wimax. Maybe I should just go ahead and apply for Wimax. If it doesn't work properly, back to square one I guess...:o

I understood from the Tekom techies that WImax is the same as ADSL except that the copper is replaced by a radio connection. Terminates the same in the exchange.

I just want to confirm before committing.

Well, if you gat Telkom wimax, let us know, as they do not accept any new orders

So I have realised. I was informed today by a Telkom rep that the Wimax roll out has been suspended indefinitely.

That only leaves me with Telkom 3G or a second DSL line at home...

Thanks for the replies.

Anyone know why Telkom have suspended sales of Wi-Max and what is the alternative. We "lost" our landline connection in Apr 2008, and have been runnining with Telkom Wi-Max since Dec 2008, both voice and data, but I have concerns when I hear the service is no longer available to new customers.
