I am totally new to wimax, only reading through the FAQ now am i interested in it.

Telkom said my area is covered but cannot assure i will have great speed etc. But i will wait for somebody to come to my house to check.

Just wanna get a breakdown of the whole thing cause me and my dad will be splitting the cost.

I wanna know what type of router/modem i must use? Is it the same as a normal dsl router/modem? How much does something like this go for?

Telkom quoted me R1399 for one. But just wanna make sure...

You cannot use a normal ADSL Router/Modem combo as the WAN side is a RJ11 socket and for WiMax you need a RJ45. The device in the link is a Router only as the modem section is part of the WiMax install.

So then can you connect the RJ45 jack directly into your computer?

if yes, can you plug it into a switch to be used over a network. Or a wireless switch to use it over wireless.

How many simultanous connections does it allow?

Yes you can plug it into a switch but since it is only a modem you will still need a PPPOE connection from a machine connected to the same switch to make the internet connection. I would recommend the Router I linked as it is a wired and wireless switch. You will have to ask the guys that actually have WiMax installed regarding the max simultaneous connections.

I have an Apple Airport base station (both the express and the big square one), it has a ethernet plug for DSL/cable modems and on the box it says supports PPPoE connections. Does anyone know if these could be used as a wimax router as well? I will go through the set up pages later to see, but if anyone knows offhand in the interim that would be great.

Sakkie I think that would actually work. Sounds like the Apple Airport base station has a built in router. Just make sure it is not the version with a DSL/Cable modem built in already.

I am just making sure, I can still get Wimax even though I don't have a telkom line?
