win 7 64 bit not recognising all my ram?

Hi,

Picked up another 4gb ram ( now have 4 x 2gb 1333ghz ram) this morning at Rage - plugged it in at home, and only 6gb is showing.

Rampage II Gene Mobo
I7 950
Win 7 64
Cpu-z is showing 8gb installed - all triple channel
Win Resource Monitor is showing 6gb
Right click on my computer is showing 6gb.

ARGHHHHHH .. google is not helping either...any ideas? (and yes they are in the right channels)

With a socket 1366 you should install RAM in multiples of 3 and not in multiples of 2!

You will have slightly better performance if you just use 3x 2GB instead of 4x 2GB, unless you are going to be using more than 6GB of RAM.

I would suggest that you update your BIOS, like Bosvark said, and then ensure that you have installed the memory in the correct slots OR simply remove 1 memory module and run you system in tripple channel mode with 3 memory modules instead.

I have updated the Bios, its the newest ver, and yes i followed the manual with the slots ot pop the 4 chips into. Weird that everything besides windows is finding all 8gb though

Running tripple-channel with 4 sticks? Maybe that is your issue. Try manually set your RAM to dual-channel in your BIOS. Sounds like that or a memory mapping issue in the BIOS. CPUz will just pick up how much ram is physically there, not how much is available for your OS to use.

Have you tried reinstalling the ram? just giving it a little wiggle and ensure the ram slot pins ar all pushed out. If the ram is in properly, it's either faulty slots or some setting thats needs to be changed..

You could always run something like memtest x86 to ensure that the 8GB is working.

I still stand with my original point that you would benefit more from running 3x 2GB.

1. ram is seated properly - several programs are picking it up, only win 64 isnt.
2. Since when is more not better. meh.
3. I'll go with the 6gb in triple channel, no problem.

The question still stands tho, why is win7 64 the only program not picking up the 4th chip, and everything else is (HW monitor, speccy, sisoft sandra, everest etc).

I went into this some time ago, and I remember that most reviews did not show a significant difference in memory performance between double channel and triple channel.

So, if your application can use 8GB, it will be way faster than triple channel 6GB.

any windows 32bit can only see up to 3GB ram and to be able to make use of more than 3gb you need to install a 64bit operating system

Some (old) memory controllers are also unable to give you access to more than 3.25GB RAM - like my Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop won't allow me to use more than 3.25GB even though I'm running Windows 7 x64!

Just for the record - the max memory box was unchecked.

Still only seeing 6gb, cant find a memory remap option in the bios either.
