Win 8.1, map drive showing in Explorer, but not in programs

Our 'server' has a folder that is shared over the LAN network, it has Win 7 on it. The files in this folder are accessed by everyone and the folder is mapped as a drive on all the other computers.

We've bought a new laptop, with Win 8.1. This shared folder on the server, has been mapped as a drive on this laptop, like all the other computers.

If we go into Explorer, then we can access all the files and everything on the mapped drive. But if we try to access the mapped drive from a program, eg. LibreOffice, Thunderbird, we can't access it. It doesn't show as a drive.

Any suggestions please?

Finally got the answer.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Under that key create a DWORD value named:
EnableLinkedConnections
And set it to 1

I did it and it worked, no problems so far.

I've seen this problem on other programs. I think it is more a problem with the program than the OS...
