Does Win XP Pro SP2 support 4GB RAM? Looking to get another 2 x 1GB sticks for my PC. I have the ASUS P5N32-e SLI board.

32 bit OS's will only see 2.75GB of the 4GB. To get full value of it, you need to run a 64 bit OS which can see up to 128GB RAM!

windows xp only needs 2 gig memory is run at its best

running more than 2 gig on a windows xp pc is waste

you need more memory for vista because 2 gig for vista just aint enough

Not entirely true (unless there is a difference between XP 32-bit and Vista 32-bit). My Vista 32-bit notebook sees 3.5Gb of the 4Gb memory

Really? Must have got my figures mixed up...Thought it was only 2.75 that it sees...

Snail don't waste your cash on extra ram buy my Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 running at an amazing 3Ghz!

Uhm that is if your board supports Core2 Duo :-)

Well back on topic I have upgraded to Vista 64bit and bought another 2Gig of ram and man what a difference :-)

Windows she is flying.

Really? I am seriously considering doing that as well. My Vista now with 2GB runs quite alright but it can be a bit slow at times...Keen to check out the 64 bit install as well...

Well that is interesting. Have you ever had 2GB on there? Did you notice much of a difference?

Nope, ordered it with 4Gb and 64-bit Vista, but they shipped the wrong Vista :( We order all our machines with 4Gb as standard

i think you meant to say that 32bit XP can't see more than 2gb RAM. Vista can.

Erm, ok I will go with that. I was a bit confused to be honest :p

So, to sum up, 64 bit installs can see up to 128GB of RAM
32 bit XP can only see 2GB RAM
32 bit Vista can see 3.5GB RAM

That about right?

From what I understand, it depends on the amount of memory mapping that needs to be done, for the Display Card, etc

More complications...:(

So it depends on the display card as well? I don't think my 8500GT is gonna be able to map much at all :p

I'm running 4GB on XP 32-bit and it sees 3.25GB - got a 512MB graphics card that has been allocated 512mb in the BIOS - I saw a fairly substantial difference in performance between the initial 2GB I had and the additional 2GB I added... particularly when I do my video editing and gaming... never tried the 64-bit OS, so cannot comment on it.

Cool, sounds worthwhile getting some more RAM while it's still cheap then.

Reading through the replies to this post there seems to be a bit of confusion regarding what RAM the OS will see so I hope this helps:

Operating systems that will give you the full 4,194,304 (4Gigs) of useable memory space are any 64bit Windows, any Linux regardless of whether it is 64 or 32 bit, Windows XP32 SP0 or SP1, Windows 2003 32bit, Windows 2000 Advanced Server 32bit.

ALL other versions of Windows i.e. Vista 32bit and Windows XP 32bit SP2 will only show 2.8 - 3.4GB.
