Win10 problem?

The start button just stopped working, can't launch apps from cortana, can't launch settings.

Any ideas?

I can't get to the updates screen, settings icon i have pinned on the task bar opens and then closes. Restarting via win+x shows no updates.

Reindexed everything and restarted, working again.

the following usually works for me when Explorer hangs or the Start button stops responding...

ctrl+alt+del
task manager
find process "Windows Explorer"
end task

if Explorer.exe doesn't restart on it's own
then

ctrl+alt+del again
task manager
file
run new task
explorer.exe
enter

Any possible virus infection? Can you perform a full system scan with any AntiVirus program?

the following usually works for me when Explorer hangs or the Start button stops responding...

ctrl+alt+del
task manager

find process "Windows Explorer"
end task

if Explorer.exe doesn't restart on it's own
then

ctrl+alt+del again

task manager

file
run new task
explorer.exe
enter

Or press the reset button. But I think the issue is due to virus infection if there is no Windows update issues.

I had this happen to my W10 although its in a VM so I just murdered it and upon reboot all was well.

Use the built in windows AV and confirmed the system is clean by running eset nod.

What do you mean by restarting the Windows ? Oh i mean something like you said "reindexed" ? Could you please point me and others out to what is going on there for that matter ? I am getting along with such case first time in my life honestly.

1. Hold down the Windows Key+R to open the Run window. Type in the following without quote marks: “control /name Microsoft.IndexingOptions”.

2. Click Modify on the bottom left of the Indexing Options window. Click the “Show all locations” button, then untick all the currently ticked locations. Click OK.

3. Now click Advanced, then click Rebuild in the Troubleshooting section. A message will pop up saying that this may take some time. Click OK.

4. Hold down the Windows Key+R to open the Run window again. Now type in “Shutdown -r” without quote marks to reboot your machine.
