Hi, got 2 laptops, and a maconi adsl router with wifi.

One laptop got xp on it, and connect to wifi, no problem.

The other, hp with win7, see the marconi, but when I prompt to connect it fails.
Is the marconi not win7 or is their some setup I needs to do in win7.

Dude, you might be in the same boat as me. Let me guess you have an atheros card in the HP? And you're probably on 64 bit windows 7?

Anyway, just in case I forget to come back, and your response is yes then you'll probably have to take your HP in to get the card changed for a broadcom or any other card that's SKU'd for your system.

It's irrelevant which OS you use to connect to the wifi. It may be the most obvious difference that you can see between the two machines... but that's not the issue.

Make sure you have the right settings entered. WEP or WPA. AES etc etc. Check the settings you use on your XP lappy, and make sure you have entered the same into the win7 machine.

The first thing I can think of off hand is when you see the access point in your list of networks to connect to, right click on it and go to properties. Once there, make sure that you have the right security type and encryption type. Get that right before you click connect.

I'd agree with you shogun, but I've had similar problems with HP and Win 7.(besides, Win 7 looks at the network you're trying to connect to and authenticates appropriately, so WEP/WAP settings not likely the cause) And when you have several devices all able to connect, save for the one you can't help wondering why.
I maintain it's an atheros card in there.
Just to clarify on the problem (sorry, don't have the exact links.) - It appears that when you have several very powerful wifi signals in close proximity then it precipitates the problem. Try moving your laptop to another room (the win 7 one) quite a ways away from your AP, and see if you can connect from there.
If not, then it's likely another problem altogether.

I started typing my response before you posted yours... so it wasn't in any was a disagreement. That said, more things to try before taking your lappy in aren't a bad thing. I've experienced the same thing, so I posted how i've resolved the issue before. Win7 doesn't always get the security type and encryption type right.

My apologies shogun - I latched onto it like it was needlessly. Thanks for the input all the same.

Firewall or WiFI Card Drivers

Hey there, try disabling your firewall. Had that cause some grief in some instances. Also yeah some LAN cards are a bit dodgy, might need to update the drivers. Anyways thats my 2c worth

Good Luck

Ed

still does not work, see wireless network, try to connect, but no.
I deleted the connection and build it over. no luck.
