Win7 to Win XP...possible?

And what sux with Win7 starter is its a 32bit version and the only upgrade path is a new OS purchase.

Seriously, users can't upgrade from Win7 Starter 32-bit to Win7 Professional 32-bit?

Starter is more of a ''oh look the PC works'' OS.

It's dirt cheap compared to the other versions.

You can now even DL word & excel for free with new machines legally. From what I've heard* even those are a bit restricted.

*Heard so not sure if they really are restricted.

& if you want any of the other components like powerpoint or outlook you need to buy the package that has all the components you require....

My wife's Lenova G550 comes with Win7 starter and Office Starter. Nothing wrong with the OS and since neither one of us likes eye candy, its plain look is great and its functional. The Office Starter which includes Word & Excel is functional enough for my wife and she needs nothing more. The only noticeable thing is the constant "do you wanna buy" popups during startups and the static right side panel with a M$ Office ad.

(Excel cannot run macros but we don't care, also cannot do pivot tables either. Words limitations are not an issue. If I really need more features I would then get M$ Office Student & Home)

End of the day its a cheap option and keeps the price of the laptop down.

So they became cheapskates. The ones with Vista use to be home premium.

Ofcoz they will advertise, they want you to pay more money to them.

& yes. Like everyone else even the laptop manufacturers are playing the ''cheap'' game.
I just wish that they would be more open & upfront about the limitations of the various software as it can often cost a client more later to make the software changes (software & poss labour charges) than if they just spent a lil more initially, if they needed better to run specific apps.

The technical reason why Professional or Ultimate 32-bit isn't the default install with just Starter (or what have you) functionality enabled ? Just aiming for a small storage space footprint? Or more technical like registry or kernel or something?

OK, so I ran the Win7 upgrade advisor now on the laptop and I have the following options:
win7 Home Premium - 32 bit
win7 Professional - 32 bit
win7 Ultimate - 32bit

Now bring dollars to upgrade ... this is why I dual boot with an Ubuntu partition so I can do proper work on this laptop

It is offering you an upgrade from MS Starter? Are the upgrade options offered as online purchase upgrades or retail store upgrades?

In South Africa we do not qualify to purchase online (unless your billing address is in one of the designated countries on the list) so we need to purchase in store (retail) the upgrade. I'm not so sure what the costs are but somehow > R1k comes to mind.
