Just before I got my 3G contract in Feb 2005 I called Vodacom to enquire about the minimum requirements. The guy said "You need a laptop with Win98 and a PCMCIA slot as minimum requirements". He also mentioned x amount of free MB harddrive space. I then got hold of a guy who had a 3G card and we just had enough time to plug it into my old laptop. The laptop correctly identified the card, but as my friend was in a hurry we had to stop there.
Got my 3G card, plugged it in, installed the software and then ...nada.
Called Vodacom again. "Sorry sir but it won't run on Win98". The tears welled up and I had the urge to go and blow up something. Well, in for a penny, in for a pound. I got in the car and bought a new laptop. Then suffered for several weeks to get a stable connection.
Bottom line is that the guys seem to have decided not to support Win98.
What I cannot understand it why people can't write OS independent code? In the end these type of devices are COMx communication devices and should only be tweaked in the final interfacing to the card.
