ZoneAlarm is known as the "hacker safe" firewall, comodo is well into it's league, but is easier to use for the average user.

ZA is very powerful, even for a free version, not many firewalls come close to it ;)

No. Avast is only an AntiVirus program. It's a VERY good program, comes close to the good ones you buy in the shops. (NOD32, BitDefender). You'll have to download a seperate firewall.

Comodo and Zone Alarm are pretty much in the same league. Some might say ZA is better, but they both provide the same protection against incoming threats.

Yes, it's an extremely good FireWall. Yet I prefer COMODO, since it's provides the same protection and is easier to understand and configure. Both are very powerful products though.

Remember Shank, never install more than one AntiVirus on your PC. They will conflict and provide less protection, not more. Having more than one AntiSpyware program however, is a good idea and will provide you with solid protection. :cool:

Ok I'm gonna give Comodo a bash first. So this runs alongside the router firewall, right?
 
If your router's firewall is solid then a software one is pretty much superfluous.

Spyware - www.microsoft.com/spyware - nothing wrong with that.

Installing anything on top of a system that has been compromised is a waste of time because you cant be 100% sure that all the gremlins are gone. When you use your computer to make online purchases and do your banking it pays to be certain.

Well my router is Telkom's Mega 100Wr and I don't associate 'solid' with Telkom.

I'd be concerned if they manufactured the modem. Do they?
 
It's the outerinfo spyware you're talking about.They have an uninstaller on their website but believe me it don't work.To run av,firewall and anti spyware now won't help you with this one.It keeps coming back.The process to clean up is quite long.Adaware and Spybot can't even get it.

First uninstall the program "outerinfo".Then google outerinfo and you'll find detailed instructions for cleanup.Its Sat night and with a few cold ones in me am too lazy to do it.

Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D are not efficient enough for today's threats. While they were very good programs 2 years ago, I don't recommend them for today. Maybe if you only browse the Internet once in a while. But if you're a frequent user, the best free one out there would be AVG antispyware. ;)
