Looking at getting my windows tinted - not that cheap horrid "gangster" opaque look a lot of those Corolla, Polo and Etios drivers out there have - just something classier and slightly darker.

Those that have had it done professionally, how much does it cost roughly? And how did they handle the 3rd brake light if it's mounted inside your rear windscreen? I'm assuming they can cut around it? Seen cars where the 3rd brake light is barely visible because of the tint. Definitely don't want that.

Had my Everest done @ Supaquick in Bellville about 2 years ago when I bought it. If I remember correctly it was about R 2200 (the invoice is somewhere). The larger the vehicle the higher the cost. No issues so far.

Ps, there's a legal limit on how dark the front windows (side) may be and the rear (side) is allowed to be darker.

I had my windows tinted last month and paid R1300. The quotes I got ranged from R1100 to R1550 from the 'more professional' guys. Chose to pay R1300 in Kuilsriver as they were the closest. The R1100 was in Ndabeni, I just didn't feel like driving on the day.

Then there were a few quotes I got from the mobile guys (they apparently come to you). Those ranged from from R750 to R1000.

The 3rd brake light was not affected/covered at all. They worked around it. I doubt they could have done it any different though considering they put the tint from the inside.

The only thing that was a bit annoying was most places I got quotes from kept offering smash and grab which I was not interested in.

PG Glass is generally the goto place but their prices have gone up quite a bit in the past few years (last time I was quoted R1500 for a normal sedan).

Also, I think legally the lowest tint you are allowed is 30%. PG therefore won't install anything less than that but the other smaller companies will do it.

I went with this this guy the last time and paid R800 through HyperLi. He installed 20% tint which is still quite transparent and visibility is still good at night. Haven't had any issues with bubbling or fading for the past 2 years.

I should actually also look into this, the tint on my back window started bubbling and I need to replace this at some stage

I was trying to stir....

Anyway I have the same on my Landie. Darkest on back windows for kids. PG Glass.

Okay, I'm slow today sorry. Talking about landies, I saw an old defender on display at the James Town Square the other day, just as I was thinking they'll regret this when they have to clean up the oil spill later I noticed the tray they had under the car to catch the oil

I had my Audi done with ceramic tint (30% sides which I think is over the legal limit - too lazy to check - 15% back and 5% front). It cost R3k and was perfect for the 4 years I owned the car. Probably still perfect today. It was a place in the CBD that did it where I parked my car at CTICC (they rock up with a bakkie and grab your keys and get to work - full valet service too). Can't remember the company's name but there are a number of good tinters in Cape Town.

EDIT: Found them https://autoarmor.co.za/

Was a while ago so I don't know what they are like now. Also, it was ~R3K not R6k...

They had a oil leak pan under the brand new Disco launch last year, or sometime around there. The internet went apeschit...

My Disco II is standing in the shop since end of Jan....busy with Chevy V8 conversion.

The Buick engine that was in there, leaked like a MF...mostly the V-pan gasket.

Yeah, I rag on the land rover and the jeeps @Flarsiep but I wouldn't mind owning either.

Thanks Datura! I think I'll give these guys a shout.

Quoted just for next time you wanna try sumting...
Wife's Hyundai have a rather dark tint on the windows. During the day it is awesome, but at night in a darkish area my view to the outside is more limited than I like. Someone walking up surprising me ain't cool, as I tend to hit out when surprised. Not gonna be cool when a homeless kid walks up to beg for a fiver and I give a fiveknuckle sandwich.

Yeah, I would love to own one. I stay on the farm and they say old oil keeps the snakes away, thus parking a jeep by the gate would almost guarantee no snakes.  :p

Get a Landy for that then. Jeep will break down or run out of gas before you get to the gate
