Hi there guys. I made the mistake of upgrading from Outlook express to MS Windows Live Mail (V2009, Build 14.0.8064.0206 since upgrade a few days ago) a few months ago. Back then I was on iBurst, and didn't have any issues. I upgraded to ADSL recently (and I DO mean upgraded), but since then - even after a good format - my [email protected] and my [email protected] (also a live.com "alias") accounts are having problems sending/syncing.

The mail usually gets stuck in the outbox for AGES, doesn't get sent, and then gives this error:

Unable to send or receive messages for the xxx account. To send and receive messages in your Hotmail account, go to http://hotmail.live.com on the Web, or try again later. To get help from Windows Live Customer Support, go to http://support.live.com and click Windows Live Mail in the list of services.

Only after I shut down the application, terminate wlmail.exe in the Windows Task Manager, then restart the application do my messages then get sent. I don't have the option to downgrade to Outlook Express or Upgrade to Thunderbird, as none of these have the option to transfer the accounts, mails and settings (I know I could start from scratch, but geez!).

Needless to say Live.com support site doesn't cover this. I was hoping that it might be a simple port or server setting n my ADSL modem (though the accounts connect via an http server), or the fact that I'm behind a NAT connection.

Help much appreciated, or even a "I have the same problem!" message would be nice :P

I have the same problem. :) My windows live mail checks my gmail accounts, an mweb account, and a vodamail account each time without any problems. My hotmail account, which was automatically configured by live mail when it installed, often gives me the problem you describe. I switch between adsl accounts a lot, and live mail I think gets confused. The error is often the same as you describe, or sometimes "You are working offline - would you like to go online?" When in fact I'm online all the time. Are you using different accounts? Also, I think this is a server issue as well, as if I wait 1/2 an hour, hotmail connects and there's no problem.

If you're using avast as an anti-virus and have added custom ports, then this error also occurs. If you're using AVG, then it doesn't even see your hotmail (or gmail for that matter) and therefore I don't think it could cause the problem you describe.

Edit: Try searching the newsgroup, I've found a few answers there: microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

Ah, newsgroups - haven't used them in so many years... wish me luck with the learning curve! lol.

I also have gmail set up as an account - ironic that MS Live mail can deal with all account types but its own - maybe we'll get the "It's not a bug, it's a feature" explanation from them.

I'm using AVG by the way :)
