I know this is probably not an ideal scenario, but I'm fairly heavily reliant on Outlook, and don't like Office 2013 at all. 2010 is still quite pricey as well, and also not that easy to come by.

Apparently Office 2007 works on Windows 8.1, so does this mean it will work on Windows 10? I could probably try it for myself, but I'm lazy. :)

I'm using it on Windows 7 atm.

Hopefully not. MS normally only supports version n-2 so on Win 10 that'll be Office 2015(n), 2013(n-1), 2010(n-2)

Why don't you like the latest Office? Office has improved with every iteration. I'm using Office 365 and it's fantastic, particularly Outlook.

It's less about disliking it and more about not being willing to pay that much for it. Office 365 is fine, but you have to pay for it every year. I've been using Office 2007 for 7 years. So if Office 365 is ~R599 x 7 = R4193. I might as well just buy Office 2013 pro, or whatever's coming next.

It would make more sense just to buy a basic Office Suite with the latest Word, Excel and Powerpoint, and find a way to migrate to a free mail program like Windows Live or Thunderbird.

I was given a 2 year supply of Office 365 with a Telkom Contract, but gave it back when I cancelled the contract.

I still like the look and feel of 2010 better than 2013. 2013 is all white and clinical. For me it's an eyesore.

Office 365 is possibly the best deal in the tech world right now, so I really don't think you can hold the price against Microsoft. R900 per year for 5 PC's to get all the latest Office apps available and unlimited OneDrive storage each. That's insane value.

Your cost calculation doesn't mean all that much considering that you've been using inferior software for many years, which hugely decreases the value you're receiving. Also, Office 365 will always be up to date and never be a big financial commitment, neither of which can be said about buying a pro version of Office.

As a person who has to setup exchange accounts on a regular basis lets just say that I hate Office 2007. It is a terrible piece of software. Office 2013 gives the least number of issues.

If I become dependent on the latest version of Outlook, I'm pretty much stuck paying for Office 365 until the end of time. It becomes more and more difficult to migrate your email out of Outlook the newer you go.

Outlook is actually all that's important to me. I mostly use the other apps as a viewer for docs I get sent.

The fact is Outlook 2007 works perfectly for me on POP, I don't use Exchange. If it works on Windows 10 then great, If it doesn't then, oh well. I'm just not a fan of annual subscriptions beyond my AV software.

Another big issue is that they're subject to change. Prices will most likely increase on an annual basis.

You can always migrate your mail out of Office. Just make a backup file that other email programs can read. I moved years of emails from Outlook to Windows Live Mail for my dad last year.

As for being 'stuck' paying for Office 365, I see that Office 365 Home now sells for R718 from Rebel Tech. That's R12pm per PC if you have 5 PC's in your family. Just the unlimited online storage is worth more than that. Buying a single copy of Outlook 2013 would cost R1.4k.

Edit: The price of Outlook 365 has been decreasing in SA. And Microsoft's new stance on making their products affordable means it is highly unlikely they're going to nerf the 365 subscription.

I have only 1 PC that I need Office on. I might consider it if it's easy to migrate contacts and mailboxes to other programs like Windows Live or TB. Maybe I'll download a 1 month Trial and see if it will work. Do you know of any tutorials that show you how to export Office 2013+ to Windows Live mail?

I looked around and found nothing, hence hesitance my to move to Office 365.

Edit: Also, is it possible to do a straight upgrade from Outlook 2007 to Outlook (365)?

You can also get Office 365 Home from Takealot for R729 including free delivery.

My order was delivered in 8 hours.

I also make use of the 60 minutes of free calls per month to landlines that comes with it via Skype.

Update:

You can get Office 365 Home for R659 from Kalahari if you apply the voucher code "kalaharicloudJan15".

That is about as cheap as you are ever going to get it.

I've tried it, it works. Granted, it doesn't flow very well (doesn't even flow well for Windows 7 personally), but meh. It is Office 2007. 2010 felt like a tremendous leap with all that Microsoft learned from it.

I've messed around with Office 2013, and it's not bad once you apply the dark grey theme. Without it, it just looks like a mess to me. Reminds me of Windows 3.x.

Dude what the hell. The light and dark grey themes look hideous.

No decisions - just use Office 365 and you'll always be up to date. It's going super cheap on Kalahari if you use a voucher. And you also get unlimited OneDrive storage. If you have a family who also need Office, the Home subscription is insane value and hardly any more expensive.

Seems to be horrendously expensive to me. Not touching that.

Are you crazy? You can buy a year of Office 365 for R659. It can be activated on 5 PC's, giving each all the latest Office apps available and unlimited OneDrive storage for an effective R11pm. That's one of the best deals in the world of tech.
