Windows 10 File Explorer worse than snailpace showing pic thumbnails?

Windows 7 was useable in this regard but Windows 10 is seriously slow, opening a File explorer window equals snail pace green ribbon freezing the window/mouse pointer with the busy processing sign, sometimes can leave it for a few mins and still the green junk and Hdd chatter is having its way with my computer. Faqing hate Windows from this regard, Os-X has virtually no slow down with displaying thumbnails, at this moment in time I'd rather slit my wrists than use a Mac but still.

Would really love to sort this out as a I have folders with hundreds of jpegs and its driving me nuts not being able to quickly scan through them with thumbnail view. Seems worse with DNG images than Jpeg, Jpeg isnt much better though.

I have i5 Quad core pc with 16GB Ram, so that shouldn't be the bottle neck, OS is on 256GB SSD, files I'm trying to view are on a 2TB WD hdd.

My one works fine - Win10 and a mechanical HDD - that is after I killed all of the microsoft apps on my PC with a flamethrower. If you want I can give you the command to do so....

Did you have the same experience before your killed them?
I have tried killing most of them and disabled indexing except in program/system files, it does seem like Windows is trying to read/index all the metadata from each pic instead of just displaying the thumbnail, faq it p1sses me off, just show me the bloody thumbnails already!!

When you open the folder and it's taking time to load. open Task Manager and see which process is using the disk.
 
Whats the average size of the pics?

Also...in theory this should only happen once as the thumbnails are stored. So you should be able to force it to generate them once of. I'd guess a *.* search with thumbnail view should do the trick

Indexing was disabled...

Also OP, it may be a HDD issue. Is it one of those green WD drives?

My whole PC was iffy after a fresh reinstall with all the standard microsoft bloat on it. I murdered everything (apps, progs and services/daemons) that had an online tags associated with them.

I can't guarentee this will fix your problem, but it should make your PC much more responsive without all the bloatware running

WARNING: THIS REMOVES PRETTY MUCH ALL DEFAULT PROGRAMS ON YOUR COMPUTER APART FROM THE INTERNET EXPLORER, WINDOWS FILE EXPLORER AND PAINT. IT MAY EVEN REMOVE OFFICE IF YOU HAVE IT INSTALLED (although it didnt for me, some have reported it does) IN CERTAIN VERSIONS. THIS EVEN REMOVES THE DEFAULT CALCULATOR (although that program being tagged as online should concern you more than removing it anyway...)

I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU DO THIS AND CANT GET SOMETHING RUNNING AGAIN (like that !@$% groove music player carp) Although this method only removes services and linked programs, it doesnt mess with any other files on the PC. At least it shouldnt unless there is some sort of dynamic link to it.

Open the start menu, type "powershell" right click and run the powershell as administrator.

WARNING: THIS IS PRETTY MUCH NON REVERSABLE.

Of course you can reinstall all the things you want one by one.

WARNING: Last warning just be sure

Copy paste each line and run it, wait for it to finish then run the next line, then the last, then restart your PC. 'Et voilà, your PC is now less bloaty.

4mb. The irritating thing is even once the thumbnails are all displaying within in a folder tree if I go up a folder within nested folders it'll do its freeze thing for a while and then show the thumbnails

It's a WD Green, no issues with 7 but issues right after upgrade to 10

Might image the drive and then try that!
 
Do you actually need the thumbnails? If you've got 2TB of images I'd imagine you're using a dedicated image viewer.

You can just disable them then?

Not quite 2tb of images but probably a good few 100gb's. I often need to move them around and copy to usb etc, when Explorer works (as in Win 7) then it's a breeze but now it's just a pita.

Dedicated image viewer is a bit clunky for those functions, also I use lightroom to edit Raw and then output to Jpeg and then move them around, maybe open in another program to resize etc, convenient to do many of those basic functions in Explorer.
 
Before destroying your machine, rather create a restore point so that you can reverse changes, then run taskmanager, startup tab, and disable all enabled startup tasks, reboot and see if that solves the problem. If it does then, by elimination, determine which the culprit is.
