Hey Guys,

So not to long ago I bought a 2nd hand full computer setup, price was excellent and the only issue was it wouldn't include Windows. The owner said that he can install windows 10 for me although "not legitimately" to which I agreed upon as I can just purchase it later down the line (probably should have purchased it then and there)

So now that I've been using the PC for a while I've realized the only issue I have with this windows is that I cannot do the windows updates or any security updates, which I would expect to be rather important. The system settings says windows is installed and it even lists a product key code (my guess is he used some sort of program to authorize windows and remove the watermark logo)

So after looking around, I found you can buy Windows 10 keys for very cheap prices like less than R100 on carbonite etc.

So I'm not sure if I can buy the key, go to the change product license key in system settings and change it to the legitimate windows version and then not have to worry about the updates and security?

Will there be any other issues from adding in a legit key such as losing data on the HDD etc?

Thanks, All help appreciated.

It could be that the Activator blocked updates. Go into services (Start-> Services) and see if windows update service is disabled.

If it is disabled then you can just right click and enable it.

Then test, if updates work. Then right click on it then go to properties and set the startup to Automatic.

Getting a key wont delete your files, its best to get a key that is the same version of your windows.

EG: If you have W10 Home, get a home Key, Pro, get a Pro key

@Flashgear can hook you up with a legit key for cheap.

I mean, you dont even need to register it.. just install an unlicensed copy and ignore the watermark.. you wont run into any restrictions, can still update..

Using an activator these days is really silly, Win 10 is cheap enough if the unregistered copy annoys you.
