OK, my computer stopped working. It was a PC kit : Gigabyte BRIX. I have removed the HDD and inserted it into another PC kit: Intel NUC

Now Windows is not activated. So what are my options? Do I buy a windows licence for this "new" pc?

Everything is working so I think its easiest to get a new licence. My other option is to move all my files onto an Acer I have with windows 10. But that means I have to set up all my software including Pastel and SARS Easyfile. Right now all my software works on this Intel NUC so I would prefer to continue working on this hardware...

With the Brix I bought win8 and upgraded to windows 10. Not sure how to proceed: Where can I even buy a licence without hardware?

Did you get your Win license with your previous PC or did you buy a standalone version? If you got it as part of the PC, it is an OEM license, which you are not allowed to transfer to new hardware. If you bought a standalone copy of Windows you are allowed to transfer the license, as long as you only use it on 1 PC at a time. On the NUC, when you click on Activate Windows, they should give you a phone number (JHB number I think). You can phone them, your PC will give you a very long string of numbers, type into the phone, they give you a new very long number, type into PC, and you are activated.

No need to buy a new license. I've upgraded my motherboard and had the same issue. All you need is your win 8 product key. Phone the Microsoft activation center and explain to them what happened. They will issue you a windows 10 product key to activate on the NUC device.
