Windows 10 Spring Update 1803: Random Freezing - Anyone Else?

Since the Windows 10 April update, some users have been dealing with frozen systems when they're running apps including Chrome or using the "Hey, Cortana" command.

The good news is Microsoft's working on a fix, which may be ready in time for next week's scheduled patch.

The monthly Windows 10 updates typically include new features, like the recent Timeline activity log, and seek to squash bugs, such as the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities Microsoft added defenses for in March.

Sometimes, as with the update Microsoft rolled out on April 30th, the patches unintentionally add more problems.

Until it can deploy a fix for the Chrome bug, Microsoft suggested those whose systems are locking up can try a workaround key sequence.

If you have a keyboard, simultaneously pressing the Windows logo key, Ctrl, Shift and B might help, as that resets the graphics driver.

Tablet users can try the pushing the volume up and down buttons together three times within 2 seconds.

If you have a laptop, you might be able to unfreeze your system by closing and opening the lid.

Microsoft delayed the April patch over Blue Screen of Death issues, so while the May update is set for the 8th, Microsoft could push it back to make sure it fixes the freezing bug.

Chrome has 62 percent of browser market share on desktops, according to Net Market Share, so even if they don't use "Hey, Cortana," a majority of Windows 10 users are at risk.

Zero issues using Cortana on a Baytrail netbook and Ryzen 7 desktop. Must be quite a system-specific thing.

Hi everyone,

So it looks like I spoke too soon. I updated my Windows 10 Installation via Windows Update, from 1709 to 1803. The upgrade process took forever (I am pretty sure it took just under 2 hours). Anyway, everything works well with this update, only that my PC has random moments where it freezes. This usually happens when I have a web browser open and several other stuff open (Opera, or Google Chrome). The cursor is responsive, its just everything else that is frozen. The only way of getting the PC out of this state is to close the laptop lid (force it to standby) and open it again - I am able to enter my password and continue with my life. Its a bit annoying having this issue occur every hour or so.

Has anyone else experienced this issue with the latest update?
I have the exact same issue.

Can you check your error log to see what is there after the freeze.

Conspiracy theorist in me wonders if this problems with Chrome is not planned to get people to use Edge. I mean for one thing they damn persistent that I should use that instead of changing my default browser.

Browser wars 2.0?

Will not supirise me one bit, but to froze the whole OS is risky.

They got me to install Firefox to stop the crashing, normal users might just switch to Edge and leave it there (as Planned).
Crashing the entire OS is not such a huge risk after all if you using the Laptop for work its not like you can switch to another OS on a whim.

Using Edge makes no difference so in my case at least Chrome is not the culprit.

I have to eat my own words here.

Turns out that disabling hardware acceleration on Chrome and Edge fixes the freezing issues when using them. And I ran into that bug several times.

It screwed up the driver on my graphics card, had to download and re-install the latest Nvidia driver, now all seems ok.

Screw windows 10, last week it updated and then found an old windows folder on my 3rd HDD and then decided to make that my bootup drive! WTaF!

I had some work to do over the weekend but figured I'd have time to do the updates first, try & find a 'start update now' button on win10 and win a Datsun. Typical Microsoft making things more user unfriendly all the time.

If only Microsoft would think about helping those with minimal knowledge of the OS, they could even call the help process something catchy like "Windows 10 Update Assistant"

I've got a recurring issue with 1803, in that its screwing up my audio.
I've uninstalled old drivers, downloaded the latest and after many hours have eventually got it running.
But after 5 minutes or sometimes 30 minutes, it'll just kill the audio and I'll have to rinse and repeat to get any sound again.
Troubleshooting doesn't really help.

I'm running a HP Microserver with a Asus DGX Sound Card and the audio is running into my 5.1 speakers via 3.5mm jack as it always has.

I've been looking at ways to perhaps disable the onboard sound, but can't find it in the Device Manager or BIOS.

So what am I missing?
Any help would be appreciated thanks.

And after posting, immediate BSOD with the audio failure code again.

I forget the exact name, but something like cpusadmp.sys - but googled it prior and it was to do with audio drivers
