Windows 11 hands-on tested

MyBroadband has been test-running the first Windows 11 Preview Build released on Monday and found the early version of Microsoft’s new OS to be a more refined iteration of its predecessor.

Over the last two days, we’ve been getting to grips with its new design, features, and performance in typical remote working usage.

The entire download and installation process took less than an hour, with two restarts included.

Minor gripe - I hope we can eventually have vertical task bars. Vertical space is scarce with 16:9 aspect monitors, especially when getting work done. My monitor can flip to a 9:16 layout, but I'm not convinced yet, I think it's causing neck strain.
At the moment my taskbar is sitting on the left of my screens.

Not sure I understand, you can drag it to the left or right of the screen. That said it doesnt look great compared to linux.

Apparently with Win 11 you can't change the taskbar location anymore? It's stuck to the bottom.

  • Taskbar: Some features are deprecated. For example, Windows Timeline is gone and taskbar location cannot be changed. A bug prevents the taskbar from working on multiple monitors and the preview window may not work on the taskbar in some installations.

Just tried and confirmed you can't, but looking around it is clear many things are unfinished. I am a left side taskbar person myself.

I like putting a folder in the Taskbar so I have a little custom menu with all my programs and games. I've been doing this since Windows 98. I guess I can no longer do that from Windows 11 onwards.
