Hey folks

Does anyone know, whether it is possible to still find hardware that runs windows 2000, mainly the motherboard and graphics card.

We running a few systems for our production plants, and our software does not run on the newer windows 7 platforms, and I need to keep the systems spared for the next 4 years to will do a major upgrade of the control system.

Any other ideas are also welcome

Cheers

Virtualization?

Meaning to run win2k in virtual machines.

This will not work should you have fancy PCI controllers/IO controllers and the such.

Another option is to go to Cash Crusaders and take a shufty at older, working PC's.

Hey Librarian.

Unfortunately Virualization is out of the question as I do have a fancy PCI controller to faciliate comms, hence the dilemna.

What software and versions?

I don't see why W2K won't run on 'newer' hardware. If you look at gigabytes sites you will see they still have w2k drivers for their G31 etc chipset boards.

Thanks will have a look and see

Comms with?

To a Moore Apacs DCS system.

From what I can gather from the vendor, is that its not so much a problem with the software, its more a problem with the drivers for the Communications cards, that are problematic, even in windows XP.

And seeing as the system has entered the classic stage of it's life, they are no lunger updating the software/drivers.

There is an upgrade plan for the system, but current quote just to update the front end of the system is in the region of R800 000

And management only start to worry about it in the 11th hour, so typical.

The Main control system will probably keep running for the next 10 years, we have enough spares to cover that.

But PC's on the other hand are problematic, they just don't seem to last the same, we updated our computer systems +2 years ago so we fairly safe.

but we are trying to assist another company, who were sleeping at the time :p

On this topic:

I haven't explored the option yet, however I know of it's existence when it comes to virtualization
PCI Passthrough,it's available in a few hypervisors like RHEL and Xen/KVM,The hardware probably needs to support IOMMU/VT-d

I've seen a few setups with custom PCI cards being passed through and used by the VM exclusively,so it's not quite as dire as you feel about it
