Hi there,
I'm currently running a SBS server, and want to be able to backup ALL the data onto another harddrive on a weekly basis. Basically, I need an image of the "primary" drive to be made, and put onto the "backup" drive, so that if something goes pair-shaped, I can quickly swop drives, and carry on working.

Can anyone recommend an automatic (relatively cheap) way of doing this? If not, then other suggestions are welcome :)

Thanks, Nick

In my experience with RAID, note the following :

You will still need backup on an external medium, such as tape, removable HDD or whatever medium will suit your needs, because :

- It is not 100% guaranteed as a faulty HDD controller can mess up data on both HDD's.

- Theft of hardware, fire/earthquake/accidental data deletion/user messing around with things Best Left Alone

- Highly unlikely, but both drives might fail at the same moment (such as after an power failure - happened to us once).

So, do go for a RAID1 (mirrored hard drives) but also recognize the need for off-site data backup and storage.

Acronis ftw!

saved me alot of time & hassles in the past.

i don't know how it compares to veritas backup exec but i like my TrueImage :P

Thanks so much for all the feedback guys - really appreciated :) My problem with using RAID is that I don't want up to the minute backups, but rather day or two day old backups.

In my situation, being up quickly without having to reinstall a good copy of SBS is far more important than having completely up to date files.

Thanks again,
Nick
