I'm going to be purchasing Windows 7 soon. I'm not sure whether we should get the 32 or 64 bit version.

The PC we're using it on has 4gb ram and we will upgrade at a later stage so surely 64-bit is the way to go since it can address greater than 3.5gb ram...

But then 64-bit is gonna be a lot of driver downloads for all my devices...

This is about all i know in terms of pros and cons...

Anybody else care to shed some more light?

for one you cant upgrade from 32x to 64x so it will be a new installation "when" you decide later on to move from 32x to 64x

Well if there is a Vista 64bit driver already available for your devices, then go with the 64bit Win7. I have had no problems as yet with my 64bit Win7 and I moved over from 32bit Vista.... Not to mention that I did not need to download any drivers after installing my Win7. Only updated my nVidia driver.....

@Necuno is right... plus I would always reccommend a fresh install anyway!

so then I shouldn't have any problems with 64bit and I should just go for it?

I second that I moved from Windows Vista 32 to Win 7 64 and I have had no issues 32 bit apps still work on it no problem the performance is great even in games MW2 and WOW actually the frame rate increased by about 20 FPS with Win 7 compared to Vista. I have had no issue finding any drivers and really its the way to go for future applications.

You will find More and more apps are going to be written for 64 bit OS's so if you have the right CPU and enough memory upgrade now you won't regret it

What devices are you talking about? normal Mobo drivers or stuff like printers, scanners etc??

Adding on to what Killkom says, I reckon that Win7 64bit is so freindly, that it is going to be the "rebirth" of the 64bit OS. Finally to become more mainstream!

Yes just the general stuff nothing special :D

Excellent, thanks for the info guys!

I will put my cock on the block and say it will install all your drivers for your system. You probably have to down printer drivers, game controller drivers and other peripheral component drivers... So go for it 100% Win7X64

Edit: Just one thing - don't install Zone Alarm on it !!! nooooooooo

I'll also put IRG's cock on the block. The drivers for my laptop installed automatically when I ran windows update. No issues with 64bit so far.
:)

Win 7 professional 64bit works on my system as well without installing additional drivers. The only problem is with my TV card (TV2000 XP) - there is currently not a 64bit driver for the exact model I have, so I had to put it in a different box and stream the TV across the network.

Thanx for the vote of confidence ... ;) being my cock and all you are offering up

Some hardware is not supported if you use more than 4GB of ram (or the 32bit limit) though, to use my tuner card with 7 Media centre I have to limit the ram size in boot options, and the card runs crap.

But the card works fine on 64bit linux though.

Have not had a TV capture card in my PC for years... Have a mVix PVR for that, a bit overkill tho, cause I also have the HD & SD DSTV PVR's....

im running the 32bit win7 ultimate , got a 6000+ amd x2 cpu and 3.2 gigs ddr2 ram. i chose 32bit as i dont have the cash to go to 4gig ram just yet , other than that i dont see a need for 64bit ? except better cpu calculations ? more ram support ? hmmm cant put my finger on it now .... any help to try convince me to install the 64bit version :P would be awesome
