:mad:I recently took delivery of an Asus N61 Laptop with an i5 processor. Windows loads ever so slowly and you must wait for ages to get onto Firefox or other programmes. Shutting down takes all of 5 minutes. Any help to speed this up will be appreciated. I consider it to be on par with Vista which I had on a previous machine.

What is the size of your memory, and HDD speed (5400rpm,7200rpm)?
These two factors have the biggest impact on bootup speeds, and application loading.

Windows on a slow drive always takes long to be ready for operation.

5 minutes to shut down is a little heavy. How does it run when it's fully loaded?

Is this on battery, power or both? msconfig click startup and remove all the crap there.

Uhm, that is long. May be wiping the page file every time you are restarting.. Try downloading a windows 7 tweak tool.

I got tweak 7, it works quite well. Get the trial and check it out. I am not sure of any other good freeware tweakers, but I'm sure others know :p

I had a similar situation, my laptop with windows 7 was running really slow, so i decided to throw in the towel and give it a fresh install.
Is much faster now. Maybe give that a try as a last resort.

As a tip try set a restore point after your install so can revert to that if you start have issues.
Best of Luck!

First few start ups & shutdowns are always slow. Updates etc. Also the Superfetch thing first has to sort itself out.

Yea... SuperFetch cache needs to be built. But inevitably your dealing with a Dowz box... so for all intents and purposes, pat yourself on the back that it actually boots. : )

How much crap does it have pre-installed with Win7, toolbars etc.

I would just format and start fresh with clean install media.

I've forgotten how long it takes, since the last time I restarted my PC was about 2 months ago :p

This is a factor to consider, run a start-up manager and see how much "unnecessary" stuff starts up with your OS, disable those you don't use or need at start up

Run msconfig from the Run command > Go to Boot, click Advanced options > Select "nr of processors" and select two.

Might make a difference.

I use windows xp home edition, and the menu is completely different to what you have described. I also have a slow start-up on my pc and I need advice.

Yes, that is the config menu for Windows 7.

If you want to speed up your Windows XP pc, download and install Tune Up Utilities 2009/2010 from here : www.tune-up.com

Will definitely make a difference and speed things up.
