I have a problem with a Windows 7 workstation which is attached to a Domain. There were two users created on the workstation. One of the users was used to install the operating system & the other was used to install Sophos antivirus. The user which was used to install the operating system couldn't manage Sophos quarantined items. So, as a temporary fix, this user with Administrator rights was made a member of the Sophos Administrator group. Something has gone horribly wrong and this user is no longer an Administrator of the workstation. I cannot create new users, I cannot add users to groups & I also cannot activate the hidden Administrator user.

It worked once before without problems, but now I have major kaka & everytime I try to something user related, I receive the dreaded "System Error 5 has occurred".

I've tried both the GUI & command line options & U.A.C. is disabled.

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated!?!

Log in as administrator

Create another user with administrative rights, log in as new user & see what happens.

Otherwise something's not lekker...

You will have to change one of the user's attributes with a password reset cd. (choose one of the many available free versions).

Windows 7 does not have an Administrator user anymore as it is considered a security threat.

Are you able to login to the PC with a domain account that has Admin rights?

uh, yes it does. It's disabled by default but not removed.

Never been able to enable it via a pwd reset cd but if he can that would work.

The_Librarian: I can't log in as the Administrator, because I can't enable the account. So, yes, something isn't lekker.
AstroTurf: I will see if I can find a boot CD which can enable the account.

P.S. I have tried Safe Mode, with similar results - i.e. Still not working.

Active password changer (not free) is my favourite tool for this.

Will find all your accounts, allow you to enable them, reset passwords or change there group.

domain admin accounts & enterprise admin accounts are automatically added to local administrator accounts (on PC's belonging to a domain)

a) logon as domain admin or enterprise admin (at any PC attached to the domain)
b) right click my computer, select "manage"
c) right-click on "Computer Management" as select "connect to another computer"
d) enter wndows 7 IP address or computer name + enter
e) once it connects, do what you need for the windows 7 machine (create new accounts, move into local admin group, enable local admin, etc etc)
f) logoff
g) logon at windows 7 machine as local admin or sophos admin (that you fixed in step e)
