Windows 7 peeve

I kind of enjoy Windows 7 except for ONE GLARING issue. Whats with the long wait every time I want to copy / paste / rename stuff? Particularly over the Lan or Wifi Lan. Why the heck does it have to think so hard before it starts? Drives me insane. Any way to speed this up? Particularly the file rename / right click + properties, etc.

Dual core + quad core machines with 4Gb RAM, so no shortage there. XP was never so pedantic and slow.

One of the reasons my XP remains on my laptop.

Just tried copying & renaming - can't say that I find Windows 7 particularly slow.

Incidentally, I have a 2TB drive that I use for media, i.e. not always in use. Copying to the drive is sometimes initially slow 'cos the drive has spun down due to inactivity.

Windows 7 has a fairly savage power saving policy (as default) - it might well be that you are slowing down as a result of hibernation ..

teracopy <--- I kinda forgot about that issue with win7

As for renaming, cant really help you there.

I have exactly the same issue as you, to the T, and on the verge of a fresh install because of it.

Also use teracopy... But I think it has something to do with the extra security features. But meh never really bothered me :)

For slow right click, remove 3rd party addons to the context menu. The apps usually call this "integrate with explorer". Winrar, antivirus, VLC etc all add stuff here. This is unlikely to be the main cause.

Copying...windows first gathers info about all the files affected. This can take a while esp if its lots of small files. Using something like teracopy might speed it up. If its over wifi then this naturally takes a while & there is little you can do about it. Over wifi, you can use something like FreeCommander which doesn't do quite as much analyzing before actually copying.

If you're deleting stuff, shift-del will speed things up, but it doesn't go to the recycle bin so its dangerous.

XP was faster for a lot of things...esp network copying. I remember getting 12mb/s over crossover cables. Now I'm lucky if its 6mb/s. (Both cases 100mbit/s) Its been like that since they redid the network stack in Vista.

Interesting, my windows 7 doesn't do that at all. instant response. I use detail view and have removed all columns except Name, Date modified, Type and Size. That speeds up folder loads and file actions significantly as Explorer doesn't try open each file to get the details needed.

Me neither, my only gripe is with the Explorer, when you goto a sub-sub folder the tree on the right stays at the original sub folder.

I had the same issue with speed when copying/renaming (got the green progress bar in the address bar) - I turned off all indexing and it's helped (Control Panel->Indexing Options->Modify->un-ticked everything).
I also removed some Explorer context menus, and only kept the ones I really use - both helped a bit ;)

In Explorer, open Organize menu, go to Folder and search options. On the bottom of the General tab, there are two options to Show all Folders and Automatically expand to current folder. One issue if you check it, it tries to expand the entire network if you go \\server\share which can be slow and annoying.

Try flushing your DNS cache, a corrupt DNS can really slow things down. Also check to see if you have a mapping to a drive which is offline, this can also slow you down.

Shotto Howard, so far so good... nail--> head methinks!
:)

Actually... I may have spoken too soon....

Copy 1 file mb in size from one folder on the lan to another.... first it tells me it's discovering items... (UM WHAT??). 10 seconds later I click cancel... then for another 5 seconds it 'cancels' :p

That's weird - also try doing a disc cleanup (all programs/accessories/system tools/disk cleanup) as well as the DNS flush that bekdik suggested (command prompt enter: ipconfig /flushdns) - reboot and see what happens...

Problem is it's not new to my PC. I've got a few of machines that do it (different Lans). It's definitely a funky windoze 7 thing. Perhaps MS security essentials scanning everything first?

Yeah, it could be - what settings do you have enabled in MSSE under Real-time Protection section, and have you excluded ant specific drives or folders?
I have mine all checked (includes my home LAN network checking), but have excluded any internal/external HDD's that just store images, movies, series, music, etc - i.e. only have MSSE checking my "data" HDD's.

I just tried disabling all (unplugged from internet just in case ;) ) and it speeds things up somewhat, but can't say if there's a that much of a difference tbh.
