Hi all,

So I was on contract for a company during the course of the last year and I used my personal laptop to do the day to day stuff. However the companies IT policy dictated that my laptop be loaded with Win 7 Pro and their in house defined company IT policy.

I no longer work there now and would like to retain the personal info and software WITHOUT the policy as it has taken away my admin privileges...

It seems to be a local policy that's installed when you plug into their corporate network...I don't work there any more so would like full functionality back...any suggestions on how to do this?

Thanks!

I would have made a dual boot in your case.

Did they add your laptop to their domain network? If yes just remove your laptop from the domain by adding it to a workgroup... if you can log onto your laptop with a local admin account... else format... or go back and let them sort it...

Try typing gpedit.msc in the "Search programs and files" box under the start menu. Then set all the local policies to Not configured.

Sounds like you were on Active Directory with a domain account.

Go back to the techie and ask him to remove your pc from the domain. (Back up all your data first) You won't be able to access the files associated with the domain profile once in a workgroup.

Then check this out...

Open Regedit.

Backup your registry.

Delete the HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft Key (looks like a folder).

Delete the HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft Key.

Delete the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy Objects Key.

Delete the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policiess Key.

Exit the registry and restart.

Note: HKLM = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE & HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Note 2: The registry is and can be a dangerous place.

Yes they added my laptop to their domain.

Ok so I tried changing from a domain to a workgroup. I see that I can do that and then I will follow raind33r's method.

Now comes the tedious task of backing up all the data :(

Would Windows Easy Transfer be the best approach to backup?
