Ok so I've just installed Windows 7 Professional on my work PC but I've run into a few niggly problems...

  1. Windows Explorer keeps opening my folders in a new window
The "Launch folder windows in a seperate process" option is unchecked.
  2. Windows Explorer works on a single-click
I've checked the Folder Options and under "Click items as follows", the "Single-click to open an item" and it's sub-options are greyed out. The "Double-click to open an item" is selected but it isn't working that way
  3. I can't seem to add a new toolbar to my taskbar
When I right-click on the taskbar and go to "Toolbars", everything is greyed out. If I right-click and go to Properties -> Toolbars, I can choose from the default options (Address, Links, etc) but cannot specify my own

These are very annoying problems... Is this because I'm running Professional and not Ultimate?

An update...

Tried disabling "Prevent changes to Tackbar and Start Menu Settings" & tried all the options for "Turn on Classic Shell" in the Group Policy Editor but still no joy

Strange... look at the folder options settings: start> {search programs and files} type: folder options> hit enter. Are you an administrator?

Yup tried that.. the Single-click option is disabled (greyed out)
And I am an admin :(

This is most annoying. Just installed Win 7 Ultimate on my home machine yesterday and everything went smoothly

is this the official release/RTM of professional? 32 or 64 bit?

Try selecting "Open each folder in the same window"

Maybe the taskbar is locked. Retry it after unlocking the taskbar.
Don't think Professional would have those behaviours disabled; a fault in the registry at most. The tips above might not be worded exactly the same - don't have Windows 7 running right now to check.

yup UAC off... damn really didn't wanna re-install... gonna try it now. will be back in an hour or so. wish me luck

okie dokie i'm back...
seems windows isn't the problem. i formatted and ran with a local account where everything worked fine. it's when i login to my domain account that it's disabling certain options. it's gotta be a group policy thing but i can't seem to figure out exactly where the problem is

eish.. what company do you work for that has GP's the screw with those kind of things?

We are a development firm contracted to a call center... So working in a call center building and having close to 1'500 agents, there has to be some control I guess. Just wish they'd stop messing with our group

Yesterday, my "Desktop" tab under display properties disappeared for the same reason

Surely your admins are clued up enough to put overriding policies on your OU though?

True I spose....

I've met very few competent admins in my life, although I work with some of the best in the business now which is quite nice...

Do you have admin rights on your own box out of interest?
