Windows 7 Sharing

I think this post is going to make me look very silly, but here goes.

I have 1 pc with Win 7 Home Basic and several other running XP.

I want to share folders on a drive other that the drive with Win 7. No problem there.

Say the current user on Win 7 is RoMark.

When I activate file sharing all the files that you found for the user RoMark are shared, from contact right through to My docments. I do not want that. If I activate public folders, the the user files as mentioned for RoMark are shared, as well as some 4 or 5 public folders.

If I disable file and print sharing, I can't access any of the shared folders. (or maybe with username and password, access is granted. Can't remember.)

Is public folders like the shared documents on pc name? If so how do I get public folders shared without sharing the users main files?

I hope I explained this sufficiently, probably not.

i have an other problem with win 7 i shared my files and 2 days later the files are still shared but cant access the files over the network...

You have separate permissions for separate network connections on Windows 7 computers.

If you go into Network & Sharing Center and look on the top left-hand side, click "Change advanced sharing settings" then in there, you need to change all the relevant settings for "Home or Work" AND "Public". You will see password protected sharing there as well as "Turn on file and printer sharing" which you should select.

You also need to look at the files you are sharing and look in the "Security" tab in properties if it has "Everyone" permissions. If not, the users on the network might not be able to access the shared files/folder.

Simply click the edit button and then click the "Add" button and then where it says "Enter object names to select (see examples):" you must enter Everyone. Then click the "Check Names" button and the word Everyone should now be underlined.
Click OK and you will now have everyone accessible to that folder/file with read only permissions. You can change the permissions to suit your needs but remember to also modify the permissions in the "Sharing tab".

Also remember when you share a file it is not like xp that just shares it.

When you click share with make sure you select everyone and then click add.

Ty, sorted. Between Killa and Stroebs the lights went on for me. I'm not 100% sure that I'm right, but it seems you can't share the whole of a drive, you must share a folder in it, or rather you can share a drive, but can't write to it.
Also I changed the user the follow to lock and shared the download folder and the Public folders are available as well. Works well I think. The only thing is that user folder that is shared almost by default? That is not cool, unless I missed something

I can share drives just fine... do it fairly often actually.

If you need additional assistance, feel free to drop me a PM. I get to know new operating systems fairly quickly when they come out and I just find out random things as I go along so I know a fair amount about Windows 7 already.
