Windows 7 - Should I bother..

true yes..not to upgrade, but dont you think that you should have at least one pc running the latest software:rolleyes:

Well, XP is still getting upgrades and all my hardware stuff is supported by Win XP. Things such as USB 3 and SATA-3 are still in the future and require new hardware anyway. I also run a Mac with Leopard which I also see no need to upgrade yet to SL.

At the end of the day, upgrading for the sake of upgrading is like upgrading your clothes to stay with the current style. Unless there is a functional benefit, I don't see a reason for it.

There is Direct X 11 in Vista.

True, but he's using XP.

Vista and XP came in 64bit, so yeah.

True. It's probably easier however to get 7 64bit than find XP 64bit but I agree.

If you need better security without 3rd party apps... Install Microsoft Security Essentials

I have Comodo Firewall Pro (free) running - the best firewall in the PC world. I also have a cheap AV subscription running, I like to have cross-cover from other vendors.

I think you will find that Microsoft brought these sort of questions and threads on themselves. Some of us don't just use our computers for home use, they are business machines. We get the praises of Vista sung to us so we make the effort to upgrade. That flops. We downgrade back to XP so we can do some work without the hassles.

Now Windows 7 comes out and we again we are bombarded with the marketing. Do we make the change again? Or do we hold off and let them release a few service packs before making the change?

I have relatives working for a number of multinationals and they're staying with XP. Some are still using Win2K boxes.

It depends on what you do with your software. If XP works for you and is secure, there is absolutely no need to upgrade, unless you need some specific new feature. MS' marketing wants you to upgrade and they have a vested interest in punting new versions of Office and Windows.

AFAIK it's all hype and if you're clued up and have the security under control there is no reason to waste money and time on upgrades.

If you must upgrade, wait for SP-1.

Yup if all had peter's way of thinking we would still be using 98 or even dos :D

Not true.

Going Win98 to NT (Win2k/XP) was a major step - read up about it if you don't believe me, going XP to Vista/Win 7 is not a major step.

You know this from experience right? :D o wait

It must be a major step though because you say pinning icons is extremely hard, so surely it must be a huge step :p

I actually do.

But read about it, Win9x was basically Windows on top of DOS, it still had 16 bit code - Win XP was the first consumer level NT based OS with full 32 bit code - the main benefit was stability - when one app crashed your whole system did not need a reboot - if you remember Win9x/ME/3.x had that problem. Win2K was not a consumer level OS. So the first NT based consumer level OS was XP. I ran Win98 at home but Win NT 3.5 at the university - the latter was much more stable and when I upgraded to XP rogue app crashes did not bring the whole system down like under Win 9x/Me. That was a huge difference/improvement.

Eish.

I would put it on my home pc, but since I'm dual booting into Karmic I don't see a clean install ending happily.
Maybe I'll just take it and sell it.. tho technically I cant because its dsp.

The thing is. I would be taking it instead of payment on an old debt.
I like the idea of having it, I just don't want to go against my rule: don't buy a new windows os until sp1.
Maybe I will just get it and multi boot the whole shebang.
The main reason for the indecision is this: should I write off a R900 debt for it? Chances are I'm not going to see cash anyway....

7 is ok but XP still is pretty good if your apps won't benefit from 7.

Personally I must still update my windows system to 7 but it's a game box only. Ubuntu tickles me enough and I run XP in a vbox for work apps.

My tip... Wait for prices to drop and get the 64bit, possibly around sp1 time when the non SP1 stock needs to be sold.

If you can't get cash, get that, I guess. What I'd do then would be not install it and wait for an upgrade of my mobo/CPU/etc next year or in 2 years time and install it then. DSP will be tied to your motherboard.

LOL you suggest he does not install the 900 windows he has and cannot get rid of, wow amazing.

Dude just load it and see, no point it sitting there doing nothing, it really is worth the install, if you really want though let it sit and collect dust. Your choice at the end of the day

Yeah not install if he has something already. It's DSP - if he installs it it stays with his motherboard or did you not know that?

To be honest killadoob, PeterCH is talking sense in terms of being legal. If at anytime Madman88 changes his motherboard(after using the copy of 7 he trades for debt), he would then have to purchase a new DSP license.

Can you just phone them and the say the mobo go nailed by lightning and they could not replace it with the same mobo?

Then they activate it over the phone?
