Hi all,

I have a student in the house, and she is running W7 RC1 atm. She wants to buy the full version when it is released. I have noticed that student discounts would apply to the purchase of W7. Anyone that knows how to go about it, would she need to contact Microsoft SA, or would it be made available at the campus (NWU - Potchefstroom)?

I have seen numbers of R300 per license bandied around. Any truth in this?

Cheers Rudi

If you do a search on the Windows Blog you will see that this offer wil not apply in SA. What she can do however it contact the IT Department of the university and get a copy like that because the varsities receive a volume license key from MS which the can hand out to students.

That's cr@p, typical MS. On a related note, one thing that this country could really use is the M$ Family Pack for win7 home premium. I'd so buy that if it were a resonable price.

I wonder if it's legit to import one?

Thanks mate. Would she just get the VLK without the installation media, or would it be inclusive of the media?

I am not sure if W7 installations would operate on the same principle as Vista, whereby one installation disc would be used for all versions. Where would I get her the installation media, or maybe the IT dudes on campus would be able to help her.

Fully agree.

I wonder how much that family pack would cost, as my in-laws live in the USA and I might see them in December, or they could probably just post it to me.

Win 7 works the same as Vista - If you got the discs you can use any key you can get your hands on. The IT guys on campus can help her with the discs.

+1

Fully agree.

I have a media PC and my 'main' PC. I'm definatley buying Windows 7 for my 'main' PC - but I'd love it for the media PC too.

What do you think will happen if I install it on the 'main', activate - and then try install on the media PC that never goes online?

Had her enquire with the IT Department of the University (NWU). They will only start negotiating with Microsoft once Windows 7 has been released (next week) to be able to SELL Windows 7 to students at a discount. They only expect to know for sure sometime in November.
