I want to add an icon to the Win 7 taskbar that is a shortcut to an Access database. I created a shortcut on the desktop and dragged it to the taskbar. But when clicking the icon, it opens Access but not the specific database that the shortcut points to. I've also tried to do it for an Excel file and it does the same - opens the application but not the specified file.

Anyone knows why this happens and how to fix?

Yeah, it does the same thing with mine.
What it does is add a shortcut to the parent application on the taskbar and then pin the file you added to the shortcut. (Right click on the icon and it will be at the top).
Not sure if there is another way around it, but you're probably going to have to make do with that.

You can't add a specific document to the taskbar itself. What you can do, however, is add it to the "jump list" of the application you use to open the document. Just right click on the application on the task bar and "pin" the document you require to the application.

You can then open it at any time by right clicking on the icon and selecting it from the jump list.

A little OT....
I am using an Access 2003 db on W7 and when I open it it tells me its Read Only but its not & it lets me edit it. Have you encountered a similiar problem?

Arrgghh! How stupid is that. I can't think of any reason why Windows wouldn't want you to add document shortcuts to the taskbar (as with all previous Win versions). Oh wait, Microsoft. I suppose that explains it. Stupid stupid stupid.

I love it that way.

I've got about 50 documents I refer to all the time on 10 different application. That feature is simply golden.

You know you can add a normal quick launch bar to the taskbar if you prefer the old style.

Nope. How do I add the old quick launch bar?

No, I haven't. Initially I did get the multiple warnings about macros and security threats but the digital certificate sorted that out - now it opens without any pop-ups.

Combine Taskbar Icons
When you have more windows or applications opened, the taskbar’s space might not be enough for them all, so you need to combine them, just like you would in Windows XP or Vista.
To do this, right-click the Start button, then go to Properties -> Taskbar and check “Combine when taskbar is full”.

Here is how I do it: create a folder where you want to store your shortcuts or files (paste your shortcuts there). Right click on the task-bar> new tool-bar> select the folder you created, right click on the new tool-bar and untick show text and show title. Then just drag it to the right hand side.
