The overwhelming majority of the market uses Microsoft Windows, so it should come as no surprise that Windows usage this past weekend was higher than that of Mac OS X. The interesting stat, however, was that Windows 7 usage surpassed all versions of Mac OS X combined.

According to tracking firm Net Applications, Windows 7 commanded an average of 5.07 percent usage last Saturday and Sunday. The growing slice of market share was enough to move past the 5 percent that Apple held across all its current versions of OS X for that week.

"It's safe to say that Windows 7's daily share did peak above Mac's weekly share," said Vince Vizzaccaro, executive vice president at Net Applications, according to Computerworld.

Looking at Window 7's full week average, which started out lower than numbers attained over the weekend, Mac OS X still led ahead by nearly a percentage point. Windows 7's week averaged at 4.15 percent usage. Vizzaccaro believes that the growth of Windows 7 will mean that it'll soon leave OS X behind.

"Certainly, the trend line shows Windows 7 will surpass Mac share soon," he predicted.

Hoe many of those Win7 installations was because people had a choice, i.e. buying a pre-installed machine?

Whether is comes pre-installed or not - they still had the choice. They could always go and buy a mac - and have mac os [-]su[/-]X preloaded on it.

Roux are you and peter related?

No - actually I only tell dumb people to buy macs  - Peter tells everyone to buy a mac.

I feel dumb people do not deserve the freedom and power that comes with windows. If you give it to them they'll end up with a botnet server that BSODs every hour.

No, the best advice you can give to these adolescent users on the interwebz that go about fondling and clicking any installer - is to get a mac ;)

While i agree with you on many points in your post if people want to use mac so what? If they like windows so what, if they like linux all good.

There are far bigger problems in the world than who uses what OS :D.

+1 to that... :D

Rouxenation can be a lot of things - but mostly it is stupid. Come on guys, I've been around this block more than once - you should know that by now

Well obviously any idiot can buy Windows 7 - it comes preloaded on every non-Atom Intel and AMD CPU which you can buy. You have to ask especially for XP and only certain vendors sell XP - mostly for enterprise customers or upper end personal users.

In the same vein most people drive Totoyas, because that's all they can afford.

So peter once again you are saying only the rich buy macs?

Makes sense actually. Interesting though toyota is a bit expensive and has the best resale value :D which means mac must be like frech car :D.

No, they didn't have a choice. Windows is the de facto standard operating system sold with PCs. You can't go to Dell, HP, Acer or Incredible or even NewEgg and order a PC without Windows. Maybe there is a handful of netbooks but by far, most PCs come with Windows. Since Windows 7 is the currently shipped version and Windows Vista was such a dud - Windows 7 has taken off but to suggest something more than Windoze has a big marketshare in PCs is impossible. Last time it was Vista which was greater than OSX, before that it was XP and before that Win 98 was more numerous than Mac OS.

I'm running W7 Home Premium on my Asus 1000HE Atom N280 2GB, and it works like a charm - even running Aero !!! :D

Well Peter, why don't Apple start offering MacOS as an option to these hardware verdors? Maybe once they have a good alternative, or at least as good as you claim it to be, then they'll start flogging it with their new hardware. Just like windows ?

Oh wait - they can't cause Steve Jobs if a turd nugget.

Go ahead, you can compare Windows to any car you like on the road as long as you then clearly state Macs are Formula 1 cars. They are fast highly specialized machine - that can only be driver around very select racing tracks (where ordinary cars can drive too).

This topic is about Windows 7 and the success it has become after the failure of Windows Vista. It is about a company that LISTENS to its buyers and what they want. With Microsoft there is no holly event like MacWorld where they go - hear ye hear ye mere peasants - behold our newest tricks and toys - every duke and lord has one - now it is here for you mere mortals. No, Microsoft has partner summits with hardware and software vendors where they address as much user needs as possible.

Windows 7 is tops - because Microsoft gives people what they want. Yes, you can argue that apple does the same - but clearly they give a lot less of what people want if you read the article.

Am I the only one who doesn't believe Net Applications at all? Not referring to this incident specifically, but in general.
